The ongoing flood situation in Bangladesh has broken a three-decade record, with water levels in several rivers surpassing previous records.

According to Sardar Uday Raihan, Executive Engineer of the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre, the flood situation may begin to normalise within the next 48 to 72 hours.

Speaking to Somoy Sangbad on Thursday (August 22), Raihan said that the flood situation in the Feni and Noakhali regions has reached unprecedented levels, breaking records from the past 30 years.

Based on data from meteorological agencies, the engineer added that flood conditions have worsened in Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Cumilla, Feni and Chattogram.

At the same time, meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque warned of the risk of landslides due to heavy rainfall.

He mentioned that there is a high risk of flashfloods and landslides in parts of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Bandarban and Rangamati districts, which have been experiencing torrential rains.

However, the heavy rainfall in Noakhali, Feni, and Cumilla districts may start to ease from Friday afternoon.

The intensity of heavy rain across Dhaka and the rest of the country is expected to decrease between August 25 and 28, according to Nazmul Haque.

He also warned that heavy rainfall could resume from August 29.

During this period, the northeastern part of the country may face intense rainfall.

Besides, regions surrounding Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Khulna are likely to experience heavy showers around August 29.

The authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and efforts are underway to mitigate the impact of the floods and potential landslides in vulnerable areas.
