tom2 Meteors are not quiet? Correct. What is heard? A BOOM!That is a good point. If the trajectory is angled, a meteor can sometimes be heard as it passes over if it is low enough. I saw and heard one that made a hissing noise. The speed of light is much greater than the speed of a meteor, so persons on the ground would have seen an approaching meteor -- if there were one. Wouldn't there have been a sonic boom after the explosion?
If something's coming at you above the speed of sound, you can NEVER hear it until it arrives!
tom2 Since I was 4? I've known how to find the N. Star Polarics (tip of ursa minor) by following from the last two stars in the bowl of big dipper (ursa major) out ~ 7 distances. No, RC, you have not seen The Bear. It requires patience and personal effort. The Bear is a significant configuration (gestalt). One can see the stars and know their Arabic names or scientific designations but never see The Bear. The same is true for the other constellations. Seeing the dots is not the same as seeing the figure the dots make. This pursuit is why I have been out under the stars so much.
Earlier in the month of March, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced that an asteroid will fly over the earth. This asteroid was referred to as large and potentially hazardous. The asteroid called 2012 XA133 was set to pass Earth on Thursday, March 26 [March 27 in Nigeria] at a speed of 53,000mph. However, with a note of assurance, NASA said that the Earth will not be affected. “As they orbit the Sun, NEOs [Near Earth Object] can occasionally approach close to Earth.[Link]
Could be that the Earth in its orbit through the Taurid meteor stream twice a year is about to get rather interesting?
