At least 11 people were killed and nine others injured by lightning strikes in eight districts across the country on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Tarin, 15, a sixth grader of Sujatpur High School, and Mizanur Rahman, a farmer. Both were residents of Sotomukha village in Sujatpur union.

Tarin's father Jahir Miah said she died on the spot as a thunderbolt hit her while she was working on the premises of their house.

Mizanur died after being struck by a lightning bolt while he was harvesting paddy at a haor.

In Meherpur, Helu Zoarder, 55, of Mohammadpur village, was killed as lightning struck him while he was working at a field in Gangi upazila around 11am.

Six more people were injured in the villages of Mohammadpur, Kasba, and Motmura in the upazila.

In Cumilla, Md Eshak Miah, 45, a former member of Dhalua union parishad in Langolkot upazila, was severely hit by a lightning flash when he was removing water hyacinths from a pond near his house.

Locals rescued and rushed him to a local hospital, where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

In Satkhira, Ashraf Hossain, 28, of Kashimari Ghola village was killed by lightning while working at a gher (enclosure) in Kashimari union of Shyamnagar upazila.

Aminur Rahman, 20, of the same village was killed when a separate lightning bolt struck his house. Two more people, Mizanur Rahman and Akhtarul Islam, were wounded in the incident.

In Naogaon, a farmer named Firoz Hossain, 33, died on the spot after a lightning bolt stuck him while he was harvesting paddy at Haripur village in Patnitala upazila around noon.

In Gazipur, two farmers were killed and another injured by lightning strikes at Kapasia upazila while they were harvesting paddy at two separate fields.

The deceased were identified as Mominur Rahman of Kurigram district and Md Motalib, 40, a day-labourer.

Injured Md Alamin, 25, is receiving treatment at a local hospital.

In Kishoreganj, a woman named Momena Khatun, 35, died after being hit by a lightning flash while she was processing popcorn at a field in front of her house at Goradia village of Nikli upazila.

Md Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Nikli police station, confirmed the incident.

In Netrakona, Mitu Akhter, 12, daughter of Habibur Rahman, was killed and her grandmother Safura Begum and brother Rakib Hossain, 8, were injured by a lightning strike at Atithpur village in Barhatta upazila, according to UNB.
