The German government is trying to cover up the scandal surrounding the country's national intelligence agency (BND), a foundation for liberal politics in Germany said Wednesday.

Three members of the German parliament are due to present their report on the BND's activities in Europe and the United States to a parliamentary oversight committee later in the day.

According to the German radio station RBB, the BND allegedly spied on a German diplomat and French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius.

"The current federal government is doing everything to allow no enlightenment in the BND affair," board member of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger said in a statement.

In April, German media revealed that the BND had assisted the US National Security Agency (NSA) in spying on top political figures throughout Europe in exchange for access to cutting edge surveillance technology.

The Bundestag committee was set up to probe the spy scandal, including eavesdropping on millions of Germans by various foreign intelligence agencies.
