Where was UNSCEAR when it came to this? [Link]
Nuclear energy has probably caused FAR more deaths than the scientists' conservative figure of 985k at Chernobyl.

As Greenpeace, a professional anti-nuclear organization, was involved in the book claiming 985000 deaths due to Chernobyl, I would say that the UNSCEAR report is more trustworthy.
p.s. Niall, you say there is an agreement between the WHO and the IAEA dating back to WW2. WW2 ended in 1945 and the IAEA didn't yet exist.
1 million dead from Chernobyl alone. And Fukushima was many degrees of magnitude worse

Fukushima is going to dwarf Chenobyl. The Japanese government has had a level 7 nuclear disaster going for almost a week but won't admit it. The disaster is occurring the opposite way than...Niall,
Your previous link to the time-lapse presentation of atomic bomb explosions was interesting but off topic. You make the common mistake of associating nuclear power with atomic bombs. The two have very little to do with one another. Nations that built atomic bombs don't use and don't need to use material from commercial nuclear power plants. They have their own reactors and facilities. If every nuclear power plant in the world were to close, it would not reduce the number of atomic bombs available by one bit.
The Chernobyl report citing nearly a million deaths was never credible in the first place as it was never peer reviewed by anyone. It is blatant, Greenpeace inspired, anti-nuclear drivel.
Yes, I am a proponent of nuclear energy.
Check out the link for a sensible look at Chernobyl and Fukushima.

You state that Fukushima was many degrees of magnitude worse than Chernobyl. Do you actually understand what the term “degree of magnitude” or more properly “order of magnitude” means? One order of magnitude is a factor or 10. Two orders of magnitude is 10 X 10 = 100. 3 orders of magnitude is 1000. So by “many” I will assume you mean at least 3. Since you believe that Chernobyl killed 1 million people in the 26 years since 1986, I presume you believe that Fukushima will kill 1000 million or 1 billion people by the year 2037. Are you serious, Niall? I would suggest you need to give the issue a bit more thought.
On behalf of my kids and their kids, I will count you, Chileric, among those we have to thank for our radioactive California rain. Thank you! Thank you! and oh yeah: Fxxx you!
The publication claiming nearly 1,000,000 casualties caused by the Chernobyl accident has been completely discredited. The report was not peer reviewed by anyone. See the links below.

For the real story on the casualties caused by Chernobyl see the UNSCEAR 2010 report. Less than 100 fatalities.
