Carter said such teachings by "leaders in Christianity, Islam and other religions" allow men to beat their wives and deny women their fundamental rights as human beings.
The former president made the remarks at a gathering of human rights activists and religious leaders from more than 20 countries at the Carter Center in Atlanta.
Carter said he doesn't fault religions for oppressing women, but blames men who selectively interpret the Bible and other scriptures. He suggested there are other, more flexible interpretations.
Carter called mistreatment of women "the most serious and all pervasive and damaging human rights abuse on Earth."

Wars, torture, prejudice, hate - these are all the fruits of the current popular religions such as Christianity, Islam and Judaism.
You, danbe, on the other hand, I have no trouble tuning out, unless you have more to say than a flippant response of denial without any objective evidence to back up your mechanical support. Clearly you're a "true believer", and have no desire nor need to back up your belief...after all, it's the will of God, right?
I really wish SoTT would add a Facebook like option. wtyebear and Lynne you both hit the nail on the head when it comes to this topic. The Bible has been re written to shade women in a bad light except for one exception, Mary. I do not know enough about the other monotheistic religion's holy books to say for certain they are the same way, but I can assume they have similar discrimination.
Hey want to praise Carter who’s stopping you! .
Just like fun loving socialist Hugo Chavez , In short, Jimmy Carter is crazy about him! Carter has a history of making anti-American remarks, while abroad. He once told Haiti's dictator that he "was ashamed to be an American
Make no mistake, Carter failed miserably as a president .
When Carter was President he withdrew American support from the Shah during his hour of need, his government fell, and one of our most valuable friends was replaced by our bitterest enemy. Once the Ayatollah Khomeini had taken control, the 3,000 communists Carter had been whimpering over were promptly shot, along with 20,000 pro-Western Iranians. Khomeini executed more people in his first year in power than the Shah had been alleged to have killed in the last quarter century. So much for human rights, as if leftists like Carter had any genuine interest in them anyway, Khomeini thugs easily got the better of our worst president, and we're not done paying the price.
There are times when a person says something so obvious, like Carter, that its just like.... Well Duh! Of course they do!
lame excuses and easy to blame game!
