A new record for the number of billion-dollar natural disasters in the United States may be set this year, with 15 such events already confirmed through September.

There were 12 billion-dollar weather disasters that began during the first half of 2017, and hurricane season has brought three storms that resulted in massive damage, including Harvey, Irma and Maria. The official damage costs are not available yet for these storms but are expected to be billion-dollar weather disasters, according to NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).

Tornado and severe thunderstorm events have made up the largest share and have added seven billion-dollar weather disasters to the list.

Two flooding events are also on the list: one in Missouri and Arkansas in late April early May and one in California in February. On the other side of the precipitation spectrum, the ongoing drought in Montana and the Dakotas has already reached more than $2 billion.

Rounding out the list is the severe March freeze in the Southeast that was preceded by unusually warm temperatures, resulting in $1 billion in damage to crops, and the wildfires in the Northwest.

In addition to the economic impact, these 15 events have resulted in the deaths of nearly 300 people.

Through September, 2017 is now tied with 2016 for the second-most billion-dollar disasters in a year, according to NOAA's database, which dates back to 1980. The year with the highest number of billion-dollar weather disasters is 2011, which had 16.

Comment: As well as the financial cost, the psychological toll of natural disasters needs to be considered also. See also:

Storm Herwart has caused major traffic disruptions, floods and chaos across Central Europe. Powerful gusts of more 100 km/h uprooted trees and damaged public infrastructure, killing several people in the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany.

Two people died in Poland and two in the Czech Republic, all four hit by falling trees. Poland's meteorology institute issued gale warnings for as many as 11 provinces and said wind speeds there could reach 140 km/h, Radio Poland reports. Thousands of homes in the Czech Republic and Poland were left without power as a result of the storm.

In the German state of Lower Saxony, a 63-year-old camper drowned as flooding caught him by surprise. In Bavaria, a train collided with an uprooted tree leaving the train driver and a crew member injured, German media report, adding that the passengers were unharmed.

In Hamburg, a major city in Germany's north, strong winds uprooted trees and caused flooding. Local fire brigades have been scrambled 550 times to respond to emergency calls, the Hamburger Abendblatt newspaper reported.

Waterspout filmed in the Mediterranean sea off northern Egypt

Water a sight this was for two Scottish crew members who captured amazing images of a tornado over the sea heading towards their survey ship.

Ewen MacKenzie, 37, and Barry Stevenson, 31, were on board a vessel in Egyptian waters when the amazing natural phenomenon appeared.

It was around 7am on October 16 in the Mediterranean off northern Egypt when a funnel-like cloud began to appear in an otherwise clear blue sky.

Within minutes the cloud had formed into what is known as a water spout - a tornado-like column of spinning air which forms usually over large lakes or seawater.

Luckily for the crew of the ship water tornadoes are not as powerful as their land-based cousins but the impressive swirling vortex still came within 40 metres -less than the width of a football pitch - from the ship.

An estimated 75% of the seal pup population on Ramsey Island has been killed after ex-hurricane Ophelia.

The RSPB discovered dozens of the dead pups after visiting the island off the Pembrokeshire coast following the vicious weather.

Data collected by the organisation on the 14th of October recorded 120 pups on their nine 'study beaches' prior to the storm. Only 31 were recorded when they returned.

Tropical Storm Selma develops in a rare location in Eastern Pacific

The highest cloud tops, corresponding to the most vigorous convection, are shown in the brightest red colors. Clustering, deep convection around the center is a sign of a healthy tropical cyclone.
Tropical Storm Selma has developed in a rare location, south of El Salvador, and is expected to make landfall on Saturday.

Here's the latest from the National Hurricane Center:
  • Tropical Storm Selma is located about 100 miles south of San Salvador, El Salvador and has maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.
  • Selma is currently moving to the north at about 7 mph.
  • Heavy rainfall in El Salvador and southern Guatemala is the main concern from this system.
Most notable about Tropical Storm Selma is that it developed in an unusual location in the Eastern Pacific. The National Hurricane Center noted in its discussion Friday morning that Selma is only the second tropical storm to form east of longitude 90W on record, that did not come from an Atlantic basin tropical cyclone.

The other tropical system that formed as far east, not including tropical cyclones that originated in the Atlantic and reformed in the eastern Pacific, is Tropical Storm Alma in 2008. Alma made landfall southwest of Leon, Nicaragua and produced 14.82 inches in Quepas, Costa Rica and 11.72 inches at Punto Sandino, Nicaragua, which resulted in substantial damage.

Comment: A couple of weeks ago Ophelia formed the farthest east that a major hurricane has ever been in the Atlantic.

Some of Wales' seal population is facing devastation after an estimated 50 baby pups were killed in recent storms.

Two-thirds of the total number of Atlantic grey seal pups on Skomer Island, off the coast of Pembrokeshire , perished in the wake of storms Ophelia and Brian.

Those that managed to survive sustained injuries to their heads or bodies.

Others were separated from their mums by the weather and were spotted washing up on beaches along the Pembrokeshire coast.

Unless they are found by their mums they will likely starve to death.
