Hurricane-force storms batter Scotland causing traffic chaos in Glasgow

There was travel chaos in Glasgow today as hurricane-force winds overturned lorries and roads and railway lines were closed across the city. Motorists, many returning to work for the first time after the festive break, were warned not to travel if at all possible by Strathclyde Police.

The Met Office issued a red warning for Central Scotland - the highest level possible - as winds of 91mph were recorded in the city. The 10-lane Kingston Bridge in the centre of the city was closed in both directions shortly before 9am because of the high winds which caused two lorries to overturn, pictured. The bridge, one of the busiest road bridges in Europe, reopened eastbound at 12.30pm.

Drivers were warned the closure would have an impact on other bridge crossings and the Clyde Tunnel. The Erskine Bridge, which links Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire across the River Clyde, and the Tay Road Bridge were both also closed because of the storm-force winds.

South Africa: New Year's eve storm kills 5, 4 missing

Johannesburg - Five people have been confirmed dead following extreme weather that brought high winds and floods to the KwaZulu-Natal midlands areas of uMsinga and uMvoti on New Year's Eve, SABC radio news reports.

Four remained missing and 22 were being treated in hospital.

Provincial premier, Zweli Mkhize, on a visit to families left destitute, said he was worried that bodies were being found that did not match the identities of people reported missing.

"That means we have a challenge in estimating the numbers of people that have died," he said on air.

Norway: Landslide Forces More Evacuations

More than 50 persons were evacuated from their homes when a large landslide ripped through a rural area outside Trondheim on Sunday. It was a brutal start to the New Year, following a string of storms that also forced evacuations in western Norway earlier in the week.

Geologists said it was too early to determine exactly what caused the landslide at Byneset in Trøndelag, which extended over around half-a-kilometer of farmland. One geologist told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) that the ground in the area was characterized by unstable clay and that the stormy weather of the past week may have contributed to the landslide.

Catastrophe alarm

It set off full catastrophe alarms Sunday morning but by the end of the day, no homes had been destroyed and no lives lost. The evacuations were made because of the unstable groundmass.

"We're not at all certain that the slide is over," Kari Øvrelid of the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) told NRK. "We need to keep monitoring this."

She said the danger of more landslides had been reduced, but 22 persons remained under evacuation orders Sunday night. Police, civil defense personnel, geologists and local government officials were using special equipment to monitor ground movement in the darkness. There were also concerns that the huge volumes of earth would clog local creeks and set off flooding.

Eleven people killed as storm reaches wind speeds as high as 125kph, bringing with it tidal surges of up to 1.5 metres.

Lashing rains and gale force winds are bearing down on India's southeastern coast, disrupting power supplies and communication lines as Cyclone Thane makes landfall near the industrial city of Chennai, officials said.

Packing wind speeds of up to 125kph, and accompanied by tidal surges of up to 1.5m, Thane hit Tamil Nadu state on Friday, killing at least eleven people and causing coastal villagers to move to relief shelters.

"Under the influence of this system, rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places and isolated extremely heavy falls would occur," the Indian Meteorological Department said.

"Gale wind speed reaching 120kph to 130kph gusting to 145kmph is likely along and off north Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry coasts during next three hours and then decrease gradually."

Landslide Hits Famous German Coastal Cliffs - 1 missing

A 10-year-old girl is missing following a landslide at the famous chalk cliffs on the German island of Rügen, a popular destination for tourists. Local officials are blaming the recent increase in cliff falls on erosion caused by fluctuating weather conditions and rising sea levels.

Forever immortalized in canvas by painter Caspar David Friedrich, the chalk cliffs on the German island of Rügen have been a major tourist draw for two centuries. In recent years, however, the cliffs have suffered from major erosion. Now, following a landslide that took down part of a cliff near the Kap Arkona cape on Monday afternoon, a 10-year-old girl is missing.

The landslide struck the girl, her mother and a sister. Emergency workers were able to rescue the seriously injured mother and lightly injured sister, who were taken to a hospital. More than 100 rescue workers continued through the night searching for the young girl, who they believe is buried beneath the chalk sludge. With low temperatures, local officials said the chances of finding the child alive were slim.

The family had been walking along the beach below the the 35-meter-high cliffs (115 feet) on Monday afternoon when the landslide happened. At the time, near gale-force winds had been reported in the area.

Almost 1,500 people are now known to have died in flash floods that struck the southern Philippines more than a week ago.

Officials say more bodies had been found in the waters south of the island of Mindanao.

It is not clear how many people are still missing but officials say the search for bodies will continue.

Typhoon Washi struck from 16 to 18 December, devastating the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.

Many of those who died were sleeping as Typhoon Washi caused rivers to burst their banks, leading to landslides. Entire villages were washed away.

The civil defence office said the number of people now known to have died had risen to 1,453 after 200 more bodies were found in the water.

More than a foot of snow was dumped on the region yesterday, with high winds making driving conditions treacherous.

Several roads including Interstate 40 were shut as high winds created snow drifts and icy conditions.

There were also delays for passengers flying out of Albequerque and Denver.

Stranded motorist Tarquin Wilding told KOAT-TV: 'If you don't have (four-wheel drive) and you just have two-wheel ... you're either going to spin or stay stuck'.
