7.6 inches of rainfall in 12 hours amid high tide floods Mumbai, India - road and air traffic hit

A yellow alert has been issued for Mumbai for the period from Sunday to Wednesday.
© Amit ChakravartyA yellow alert has been issued for Mumbai for the period from Sunday to Wednesday.
It was a wet Sunday as nearly 152mm of rainfall coupled with a high tide of 4.44m at noon caused waterlogging in many areas and disrupted road and air traffic in the city.

Mumbai airport's runway had to be shut down twice - from 12.12pm to 12.20pm and from 1pm to 1.15pm - and flight operations were delayed by an hour due to poor visibility, said an airport source, adding that 15 arrival flights were diverted.

Agencies reported 36 flights were cancelled.

IMD's Santacruz and Colaba observatories recorded 151.6mm and 42mm rainfall in the 12-hour period ending Sunday 8pm. Other parts of Mumbai Metropolitan Region too witnessed downpour - Thane recorded 96mm rain, Palghar 88mm, and Panvel 85mm.

Several areas in Mumbai saw nearly 200mm rainfall during this 12-hour period, including Trombay 196mm, Ghatkopar 191mm, Chembur 186mm, Mankhurd 178mm, Wadala 174mm, Dadar 163mm, and Sion and Sewri 160mm, as per BMC's automatic weather stations which record localised data.

A day after issuing a 'yellow' alert indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall at isolated places, IMD on Sunday afternoon upgraded the warning to 'orange' - heavy to very heavy rains very likely. The rain activity is expected to continue on Monday, but with reduced intensity, said IMD.

Flood havoc across Trinidad after heavy rainfall

Homes and streets were flooded, commuters stranded, and vehicles damaged all by early afternoon yesterday, as heavy rains from Wednesday night into yesterday morning wreaked havoc and exacerbated already flooded conditions in some parts of the country.

While yesterday morning's showers gave way by afternoon to sunnier skies, and drier conditions are expected into the weekend, forecasters have maintained cautions to the public that additional rainfall could impact saturated soils and cause further flooding, as well as landslides.

Heavy street flooding was widespread yesterday while some communities in South Trinidad, where homes were already under water, found floods rising by morning.

A number of areas in Central, North and East Trinidad were impacted by early yesterday morning into midday by severe street floods, as well some residential flooding.

In Port of Spain, street floods distressed motorists and commuters, with several reports of vehicles shutting down while navigating flood waters, including on the Eastern Main Road in the vicinity of Abattoir Road.

38 fatal landslides in Nepal in 2024 to date with 135 people killed

As loyal readers of this blog are aware, I have long had a particular interest in landslides in Nepal. This is partly because of my long term research links to that country, and partly because of the heavy burden that mass movements impose there.

Nepal is very prone to landslides, in part because of its natural setting (steep terrain, monsoon rainfall, high levels of tectonic activity). This is being exacerbated by the impacts of both poorly planned development and climate change, most notably increases in peak rainfall intensity. Thus, Nepal is a poster child for a situation that is occurring more widely.

Landslides in Nepal are largely driven by monsoon rainfall, and of course at this time of year, the SW monsoon is at full strength. I've mapped below all of the fatal landslides that I've recorded in Nepal in 2024 to date - the final locations are not definitive, but this is an interesting first pass:-

The extreme weather has not been limited to Henan. Beijing temporarily suspended several suburban train lines after issuing early warnings for thunderstorms and flash floods.

A small town in China's Henan province experienced an unprecedented deluge as it received nearly a year's worth of rain in just 24 hours.

The extreme weather event, part of a shifting pattern of storms moving from southern China to central and northern provinces, has put local authorities on high alert.

Dafengying, a town within the city limits of Nanyang, recorded a staggering 606.7mm (24 inches) of rainfall in a single day, as reported by national weather forecasters. This amount nearly matches the area's average annual rainfall of 800mm, highlighting the extraordinary nature of the event.
