At least two people have been killed in Vermont as widespread flash flooding occurred in parts of the Northeast and New England Wednesday amid torrential rain from the remnants of what was once Hurricane Beryl.

Bridges and roads across the region washed out, and over 100 high-water rescues were conducted as a result of the flooding.

In Lyndonville, Vermont, a 73-year-old man was spotted driving into a flooded road, according to Chief Jack Harris of Lyndonville Police. Moments later, swift currents carried his car off the road and about 250 feet into a nearby hay field where the car sank in 10 feet of water, police said. It took two hours to locate the vehicle and the driver was later pronounced dead.

Vermont Department of Public Safety Commissioner Jennifer Morrison said the other death was an unidentified victim, believed to be a man from Peacham. But she said it has not been confirmed if the death was weather-related, pending an autopsy.

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott said that on Wednesday he signed an amendment to the existing state of emergency that had been in effect due to the catastrophic flooding the region suffered exactly one year ago to continue to access state resources.

A deadly flash flood caused by torrential rain in Slovakia's Tatra Mountains has killed two people and left four injured.

The two female victims, a Pole and a Czech citizen, died on the Monkova Valley hiking trail when the shelter they were in with 14 other people was hit by an avalanche of water, mud and stones.

The Slovak mountain rescue team, Horska Zachranna Służba (HZS), dispatched two ambulances and two rescue helicopters to the site and transported some of the injured to hospital. They failed to save the lives of the two women.

According to the mayor, the river level quickly rose right in front of people's eyes. Local people were the first to go to the aid of the tourists, but the river and fallen trees made it difficult for them to reach the group at first.

Six people deaths had been recorded as a result of heavy rainfall in Chongqing's Dianjiang county as of Thursday. State broadcaster CCTV said four people had been killed by "geological disasters" and the other two had drowned.

The rainfall in Dianjiang reached a record single-day high of 269.2mm (10.6 inches), affecting more than 40,000 people.

CCTV said it had damaged nearly 1,800 hectares (4,448 acres) of crops, and caused direct economic losses of around 82 million yuan (US$11.3 million).

On Thursday the Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters in Chongqing raised the flood emergency response to Level 3 for 14 districts and counties and the geological disaster alert to Level 3 for nine areas. The alerts are part of a four-tier system in which Level 1 is the most severe.

Vehicles swept off highway by landslide caused by rains, with three survivors rescued after they swam to safety.

Two buses carrying more than 60 people were swept by a landslide into a rain-swollen river in Nepal, with three survivors rescued after swimming to safety.

The vehicles, carrying at least 65 people between them, were swept off the Narayanghat-Mugling highway near Simaltar, about 120km (75 miles) west of the capital, Kathmandu, early on Friday.

Government administrator Khima Nanada Bhusal said the three survivors, who reportedly jumped into the Trishuli river and swam to the banks, were taken by residents to a nearby hospital, where they are now being treated.

Authorities mobilised the military and police to search for the missing passengers but the continuous rain was making rescue efforts difficult with landslides blocking the route leading to the area in several places, said Bhusal.

Police spokesman Dan Bahadur Karki said there were 41 people in the first bus travelling from Kathmandu to Gaur, while the second from Birgunj to Kathmandu had 24 passengers. It is thought that more may have boarded en route.

Some drivers had to abandon their cars during the afternoon commute on Wednesday after Montreal was soaked in a heavy, record-breaking downpour of rain that wreaked havoc on the roads.

The Decarie was one of the roadways that were partially closed during the rainfall, turning the expressway into a lake. Some drivers braved the deluge of rain and plowed through it while others got their vehicles stuck in the floodwaters.

The Decarie was closed between Côte-Saint-Luc Road and Highway 40 due to "water accumulation," according to the Transports Quebec 511 X account, before it was reopened several hours later.

The frequency of extreme weather events in Europe has risen by 48% over the past two years. This has caused a spike in food supply disruptions, according to research from Inverto, a subsidiary of Boston Consulting Group.

From 2021 to 2023, the number of extreme weather events in Europe increased from 11,442 to 16,956 recorded events. Those include things like large hailstorms, heavy rain or snowfall, damaging lightning strikes, droughts caused by hot weather, and even tornadoes.

This damaging weather has had a dramatic negative effect on food crops in Europe, leading to shortages and higher prices for certain products. Just one hailstorm last year caused an estimated €40 million in damages to crops, to give one example.

Beryl's hurricane-force winds cause widespread power outages, flash flooding in Texas - 7 killed, nearly 3 million without power (UPDATE)

mmmmmmmm
Hurricane Beryl slammed into the Texas coast Monday morning, unleashing hurricane-force winds, widespread power outages and flash flooding.

The storm roared ashore, making landfall near Matagorda at 3:50 a.m. CT as a Category 1 hurricane with gusts over 80 mph. Hundreds of thousands of electrical customers in Texas have already lost power, according to PowerOutage.us.

The storm first unleashed its fury on Surfside Beach, as FOX Weather crews captured the winds whipping through trees, even breaking off part of a palm tree.

The storm's winds have also created a life-threatening storm surge that is inundating coastal communities, and it will only get worse just before 8 a.m. as high tide approaches. Houston will face dangerous weather conditions through the morning as the storm's center moves inland.

Peak storm surge could reach up to 7 feet as the tide rises in the mid-morning, and areas such as Galveston Bay could see levels nearing 6 feet as water accumulates in the bay, the National Hurricane Center warns.

Comment: Update July 9

The BBC reports:
At least seven people have died after Hurricane Beryl slammed into south-east Texas and Louisiana, knocking out power for nearly three million people.

Beryl hit the southern United States on Monday morning as a category one hurricane, but it has since been downgraded to a tropical depression.

Officials warned of destructive winds, up to 15in (38cm) of rain and "life-threatening" storm surges.

More than 1,100 flights were cancelled at Houston's main airport on Monday, according to flightaware.com.

Some 2.6 million customers in Texas were without power as of Monday night, said poweroutage.us, with some outages also reported in Louisiana.

The storm caused at least 10 deaths in the Caribbean.

Officials said seven people had died in Texas's Harris and Montgomery counties, while one more fatality was confirmed in neighbouring Louisiana.

A 53-year-old man died after winds downed power lines and knocked a tree on to his home in Harris County, causing his roof to collapse.

In the same county, which includes parts of Houston, 73-year-old grandmother Maria Loredo was reported dead after a tree crashed through the roof of her home, according to CBS affiliate KHOU.

Loredo's family told the news station she was home with her son, his wife, and her two grandchildren, ages two and seven, when the tree fell. No other family members were injured.

Also in Harris County, a Houston Police Department employee, Russell Richardson, 54, drowned after attempting to drive through high water on his way to work, according to Houston police.

Another person died in a house fire that is believed to have been sparked by lightning, Houston's mayor said.

Three people were also killed in Montgomery County. Officials say one man was killed when a tree fell on him while he was driving a tractor, and two homeless people died when a tree fell on their tent, reports KHOU.

Houston is a low-lying coastal city, making it prone to flooding.

Sustained wind speeds in the Houston area reached 75mph (120km/h) with wind gusts reaching 87mph as the storm struck.

Beryl was expected to continue to lose strength as it gradually tracks north-northeast, but flash flooding and heavy rain remained a risk.

In Louisiana, where over 30,000 people were without power due to the storm on Monday night, one person was killed when a tree fell on her home in the town of Benton, according to a local sheriff.
