Alaska: Flooding closes highway with 'unprecedented levels of overflow'

Flooding has once again forced the closure of the Dalton Highway after it was briefly opened following the clearing of unprecedented levels of overflow.

The highway will remain closed though Monday as crews tackle further complications from a storm that has created low visibility and prevented crews from keeping up with the overflow on the road and snow drifts, Alaska Department of Transportation spokeswoman Meadow Bailey said. A 35-mile section between mileposts 378 and 413 was closed.

Trucks use the highway to take supplies to North Slope oil fields, but the blockage essentially put a halt to those deliveries.

The National Weather Service reports that heavy rains in Eastern Kentucky are expected to bring Kentucky River levels to flood stage by Saturday.

The Frankfort/Franklin County Office of Emergency Management reported that the river is expected to crest at about 31 feet Saturday, right at flood level. Residents who live along the river are asked to pay close attention to NWS and OEM updates.

The river rose 4 feet between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. today causing the Kentucky River Campground off of U.S. 127 near Owenton to move its patrons from the lower lot to higher ground.

Heavy rains closed parts of Interstate 64 on Friday and led to the rescue of a UPS driver.

Westbound portions of the highway between Evansville, Ind., and Louisville, Ky., were closed in Perry and Dubois counties starting around 7 a.m. ET because of flooding, according to Sgt. Philip Hensley, an Indiana State Police spokesman. At least one lane had reopened by 11 a.m.

Motorists were being detoured, and firefighters in a ladder truck had to rescue the driver of a UPS truck stranded in the flash flood about 60 miles west of Louisville, Ky., Hensley said.

State police urged motorists to avoid driving into high water.

Rescuers continue to find bodies buried during Chile's massive floods

The death toll from heavy rains and flooding that battered Chile last week has risen to 23, with another 57 still missing, and President Michelle Bachelet said on Wednesday she would cancel upcoming trips to lead ongoing reconstruction efforts.

The freak torrential downpours in the Atacama desert, normally the driest in the world, destroyed homes and bridges, cut off roads, and left thousands stranded as rivers broke their banks and flash floods dramatically filled dry valleys.

Although the rains ceased by the end of last week, the clear-up operation continues, with emergency office Onemi saying on Wednesday around 4,000 people were still in temporary housing and a night-time curfew remained in place for the worst affected areas, where looting has been reported.

Local Democratic Republic of the Congo radio station Radio Okapi is reporting that at least 14 people have died in flooding in the territory of Fizi, South Kivu province in the east of the country after several days of heavy rain.

Rivers have overflowed, flooding farmland, blocking roads and damaging 100s of homes. According to the source, the worst affected areas are Mutambala, Ubwari, Makobola, Swima, Kabunde and Baraka, where around 50 homes have been completely destroyed.

Radio Okapi also report that parts of the neighbouring provinces of North Kivu and Katanga, in particular the town of Kalemie, have also been affected by flooding and heavy rain in the last few days.

Four people were killed in flood-related incidents in the region in October 2014. Later that month at least 30 people were killed by floods in Kalehe Territory in South Kivu province after 3 days of heavy rain.

Fizi is around 130 km south of Bujumbura, Burundi, where 15 died in a landslide after heavy rain on Sunday 29 March 2015.

Flooding in India leads to massive mudslides, dozens buried

A mudslide triggered by heavy rain bore down on two houses early today, burying a newborn and at least a dozen others under a mountain of debris, hours before officials formally declared what many Kashmiris had been dreading.

Another deluge - months after last year's September floods that had left hundreds dead and a trail of devastation.

The formal announcement of the flood came around 7am, after the water level in the Jhelum crossed the 18ft danger mark at Srinagar's Ram Munshi Bagh and touched 19.5ft on the gauge.

Comment: In 2013, in the state of Bihar, 6 million were affected by extreme flooding. 6 months ago, in 2014, 600 individuals died due to flooding in Kashmir. And global weather patterns are only getting worse in 2015:

New Delhi: This month has been the "wettest" March in northern and central parts of the country in the past 100 years, the Indian meteorological department (IMD) on Sunday said and predicted more rains in the coming two weeks.

IMD DG L S Rathore said due to the rains, there has been extensive damage to field and horticulture crops as well as vegetables in various parts of the country.

"The ordeal is not yet over. Though March as we all know was very wet, it was to the extent that after 1915, this was the wettest March particularly in north India right up to central India," he said.

"But in the next two weeks also there seems to be a possibility or higher possibility of wetness," he said.

Rains on Sunday lashed many parts of north India, including Kashmir Valley where several houses were damaged and Srinagar-Jammu national highway shut due to landslides.

A powerful earthquake rattled the South Pacific nation of Papua New Guinea on Monday, prompting officials to issue a tsunami warning for vast swathes of the Pacific and as far north as Russia.

The magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck at a depth of 65 kilometers (40 miles), about 50 kilometers (30 miles) southeast of the town of Kokopo in northeastern Papua New Guinea, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said hazardous tsunami waves could hit coasts located within 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) of Kokopo, with waves between 1 to 3 meters (3 to 10 feet) possible for Papua New Guinea.

Landslide buries part of village in Java after heavy rains

A landslide killed six in Java, an official said on Sunday.
Twelve people were killed and 11 houses buried after a landslide triggered by heavy rain in Indonesia's main island of Java, an official said Sunday.

The landslide hit Tegal Panjang village in Sukabumi district in west Java late Saturday after a particularly heavy downpour, according to national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

"We found all 12 bodies," he said in an update, revising the earlier death toll of 10 and two missing.

He said heavy rain caused a cliff to collapse and hit the village, burying 11 houses.
