10 killed as heavy rains strike Nairobi, Kenya

At least ten people were killed and seven injured during Monday night's heavy rains in Nairobi.

Eight of the victims were killed after a perimeter wall collapsed on their structures in Mukuru Fuata Nyayo area, South B. Seven others were injured in the incident, in which the wall of a mosque went down following the heavy rains.

Police said two other people were swept away by floods in Dagorretti area and along Jogoo Road. Their bodies were discovered after midnight.

Nairobi police boss Benson Kibui said the wall is believed to have soaked with water before it went down.

"Eight people died while seven others were taken to hospital after the wall collapsed on their structures. There were also two drowning incidents in the city," said Kibui.

He said among those who died at Fuata Nyayo were two juveniles, four women and two men.

Flash floods leave 8 dead in Afghanistan

Afghanistan state news agency, Bakhtar News Agency (BNA) report that at least 7 people have been killed in flash floods in Faryab Province in the north of the country. Flash floods in Baghlan Province have killed 1 person and injured around 10 others.

Flash floods struck on 08 May 2015 in Faryab Province after a period of heavy rainfall. The districts of Garyzan, Pashtunkot and Belcheragh were worst affected. BNA report that at least 7 people were killed and over 1,500 homes damaged. The Faizabada-Takhar highway have been closed to traffic and wide areas of crops and orchards have suffered damaged.

Kuwaiti News Agency (KUNA) also report that flooding struck in the Baghlan-i-Markazi district of Baghlan province, where 1 person was killed and several injured early on Saturday 09 May 2015.

"There was heavy rain in Baghlan-e-Markazi district Friday evening and the people left their houses to safer areas. It was early Saturday when a flash flood hit the area and washed away more than 500 houses," district Governor Gohar Khan Babri told reporters in provincial capital Pul-e-Khumri, 160 km north of Kabul.

7 killed in flooding and landslides following 4 inches of rainfall in 24 hours, Southern China

China's Ministry of Civil Affairs say that provinces in southern China have been affected by recent heavy rain, strong winds and hail. The heavy rain has caused flooding and landslides, leaving thousands displaced and several people dead.

In Hunan province, 28.5 million people have been affected by the bad weather. It is thought that at around 2 people have been killed in a landslide caused by the heavy rain in the province. Around 3,200 people were evacuated and more than 2,400 people needed emergency assistance. As many as 400 houses have collapsed and more than 4,600 have been damaged in the landslide and floods.

In Hubai province, 1,300 people have been evacuated after nearly 200 houses collapsed and more than 2,300 were damaged by heavy rain and floods. Over 500 have been evacuated after floods in Guizhou province.

Three people have been reported as drowned in flood water in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

One person died in a lightning strike in Jiangxi province. Another victim was also killed by lightning in Gunagdong province, where around 1,900 people have been evacuated after more than 500 houses were damaged by the severe weather.

Parts of Sichuan province have also been affected by the floods and severe weather.

Nebraska declares State of Emergency following flooding and storm damage

Parts of Nebraska saw over 8 inches (200 mm) of rain in 24 hours yesterday, 07 May 2015. Storm and flood damage has been so severe that Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts declared a State of Emergency for the affected areas.

The Governor surveyed storm damage and flooding in Hebron, Deshler, Roseland, and near Lincoln via helicopter. Following the flight he said, "I have authorized an emergency declaration. At this time the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency is in contact with other state agencies and they are actively monitoring the situation and will provide assistance as needed."
"The good news is nobody was hurt and everybody is safe. Utility crews are out there working. We did have a power outage last night in about a third of the town. As we flew over the state, we saw more utility crews continuing to work to restore power to folks in Roseland."
Other affected areas include the town of DeWitt and the city of Fairbury, where 100s of people have been evacuated. The town of Crete saw 8.10 inches of rain fall in 24 hours. Salt Creek and Little Blue River are reported to be at flood stage at several points in the area.

The US National Weather Service yesterday evening issued an unprecedented "flash flood emergency" for Oklahoma City after storms dumped record amounts of rain on Wednesday 06 May 2015.

A statement made by Oklahoma City government said that National Weather Service officials called Wednesday night's flood threat "deadly and dangerous," issuing a Flash Flood Emergency for the first time in central Oklahoma's history. The flood threat was expected to be ongoing from Wednesday night and into Thursday as rain continues and the watershed drains.

The storms and torrential rain were accompanied by several tornadoes in the region over the last 24 hours. Around 12 people have been reported as injured in the severe weather. Numerous roads have been closed, either as a result of floods or wind and storm damage.


In a statement last night, the government of Oklahoma City said:
"The primary threat Wednesday night is rising flood waters as rain continues. Reports of flooded roadways began coming in during the early evening, particularly in south Oklahoma City.

"As of 9:45 p.m., there were no confirmed reports of serious injuries in Oklahoma City, but emergency crews continued to canvass the City and respond to emergency calls."

Oklahoma Red Cross set up a shelters in affected areas for those who evacuated their homes. Oklahoma City Animal Welfare department was working on setting up emergency accommodation for any pets.

Cuba struck by second severe flood in a week: 14 inches of rain in a day

Over 2,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes in Barocoa, in Guantánamo Province, Cuba, after a storm and severe flooding damaged 100s of homes in the areas, according to Cuba's State News Agency, Granma.

This is the second major flood event to hit Cuba in the last few days. Wide areas of the capital city of Havana were flooded on 30 April after 188 mm of rain fell in 24 hours. At least 2 people died and several buildings collapsed. Havana has not been affected by the heavy rain this time around.

Granma say that 350.7 mm of rain fell in Barocoa from 02 to 03 May 2015.

The rain forced rivers to burst their banks and resulting floods damaged homes, roads and crops. The areas of La Granjita and Horno de Cal were said to be the worst hit. Over 250 homes were damaged either by flooding or strong winds. At least 4 homes were completely destroyed. Some of those displaced have since started to return to their homes

Manhattan, Kansas, and Lubbock, Texas, both suffered flash floods after record levels of rainfall fell between 04 and 05 May 2015,

Manhattan, Kansas

Flash floods raced through the streets of Manhattan, Kansas, yesterday 04 May 2015, after the heaviest rainfall to hit the city since 1908.

National weather service said that the official observation for Manhattan measured 2.97″ (75.43 mm) at 7 pm, breaking the daily rainfall record of 2.91″ set in 1908.

They also said that by 7:45pm, 3.37 inches (85.59 mm) of rain had been recorded at Manhattan Airport, and 4.15″ (105.4 mm) in areas to the north of the city.

The flash floods made roads impassable, causing major disruptions for drivers. Photos of the floods show water around 2 feet (60 cm) deep in the worst affected areas. Parts of Kansas State University campus were under water, deep enough that some students were able to kayak along campus roads. KSU later closed flooded parts of the campus.

National Weather Service warned today that storms and heavy rain were expected through the early morning hours, and that localized flooding was possible.

Heavy rains bring death toll to 6 along Australia's east coast

The death toll from heavy rains that inundated Australia's east coast has climbed to six, as flood warnings continued following a severe deluge that cut power to thousands of homes and isolated numerous communities.

The eastern states of Queensland and New South Wales faced a huge clean-up task ahead, but were forecast to experience easing conditions following two days of wild weather.

"Never before have we seen such a huge volume of rain drop in such a short period of time," Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk told broadcaster Channel Seven.

Floods in two provinces of Indonesia have forced several thousand people from their homes over the last 3 days.

West Nusa Tenggara

West Lombok regency has been the worst affected area in the province of West Nusa Tenggara where a river overflowed after 2 days of heavy rain. Three people have been reported injured in the floods.

The latest figures from local National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) officials say that 1,229 families have been displaced by floods in at least 5 communities in Kediri district in West Lombok regency.

Floodwater is said to have reached 1.5 meters in some places. Eight houses have been damaged or destroyed and 100 hectares of rice fields inundated.

An eight-year-old boy and two adults have been killed after their car was swept away by flood waters in south-east Queensland.

Police were called to Dances Road in Caboolture, north of Brisbane, just after 5.30pm. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene along with a man in his 70s and a woman in her 30s.

Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk described the deaths as tragic, saying police investigations were under way. "On behalf of all Queenslanders we express our deepest sympathies," she told reporters on Friday night.

She described the storm cell as "off the scale".

Caboolture alone received 333mm of rain from 9am, with 277mm falling within three hours in the afternoon. The average rainfall for Brisbane for the month of May is 74mm but, as ABC weather presenter Jenny Woodward tweeted, the city has received a record amount of 181mm, with the previous mark having been 149mm in 1980. The Bureau of Meteorology has also said that some areas of Queensland experienced winds in excess of 100km/h.
