Heavy rains, high winds and tornadoes rage across state of Missouri

Missouri officials on Thursday said one person was dead and at least two more were missing after heavy rains, high winds and tornadoes raged across the state overnight.

Emergency crews found the body of one person who appeared to have been swept from their vehicle in flash flooding south of St. Louis, Missouri Highway Patrol spokesman Al Nothum said. Crews were still searching for at least two more people missing after their vehicles were found in the waters, he said.

Floodwater also breached a levee near the small community of Festus, Missouri, south of St. Louis, flooding two mobile home parks and forcing water rescues for more than 60 people as up to six inches of rain fell overnight, according to the National Weather Service. Three people were injured and taken to a hospital during the evacuation, according to officials.

1,255 wild animals found dead after floods in Bhanvnagar, India

The forest officials have recovered carcasses of 1,255 wild animals including four lions and 1,225 blue bulls and 14 chittals from three talukas of Bhanvnagar district. These animals had swept away in river Shetrunji during flash floods last week.

Following a massive search and rescue operation, the Bhavnagar forest department on Tuesday issued a statement giving the details of the wild animal that died in the floods.

"Our 30 teams searched for wild animals dead or alive in mud filled water and muck for one week. We found bodies of total 1255 wild animals including four Asiatic lions which had swept away in flood waters and reached down-stream of Shetrunji River in Bhavnagar area," G S Singh, deputy conservator of forests, Bhavnagar, told TOI.

Singh said that the bodies were found from Palitana, Gariyadhar and Talaja talukas of Bhavnagar.

700 displaced, 1,500 houses damaged in Costa Rica floods

Costa Rica has experienced further heavy rainfall over the last few days which has left 19 communities isolated and forced over 700 people from their homes.

Heavy rain and floods that hit the nation's Caribbean and Northern regions on 21 June 2015 had left 25 communities isolated and forced over 500 people to evacuate their homes.

An improvement in the flood situation by 25 June 2015 allowed Costa Rica's National Emergency Commission (Comisión Nacional de Prevención de Riesgos y Atención de Emergencias - CNE) to announce that most of those displaced were able to return home. Repairs to damaged roads and bridges had also been carried out, re-connecting isolated communities.

By 27 June the country was faced with further torrential rain which has caused damage to roads, bridges and houses, and affected over 200 communities across 3 provinces of Limón, Heredia and Cartago.

Several weeks of heavy rains across the Heartland has resulted in damaged farm lands near the Mississippi river in Southern Illinois and Missouri.

Kenny Bunselmeyer, a farmer with more than 35-years-experience said it's not the worst flood he's ever encountered, but the 2015 is going to have a serious effect on area farmers.

"Down here farmers are pretty resilient... You know we've dealt with the flood waters before... We're not immune to it by no means but we've dealt with it before and you know people survive it," Bunselmeyer said. "It's no fun but they'll get through it.""We've dealt with water down here before but it just seems like we have more extremes here in the last 10 years than we used to have or 15."

Bunselmeyer owns and farms some 3,600 acres in several Southern Illinois towns including Jacob and Carbondale. He said the floods have damaged 200 acres of his corn and soybean crops or an estimate $120,000 loss.

Comment: The flooding has also cause the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to close four locks on the Mississippi River bringing commercial barge traffic to a halt.

25,000 evacuated from flooding in 15 Maguindanao villages, Philippines

At least 25,000 persons in 15 villages of Sultan sa Barongis in Maguindanao province have been displaced by floods, which in some areas were as bad as neck deep, officials said.

Sultan sa Barongis Mayor Ramdatu Angas said the local government has declared a state of calamity in the entire town as flood water from the Ala River has been rising due to the torrential rain in the mountains of Sultan Kudarat and South Cotabato.

Rasol Angas, a resident of Barangay Barurao, one of the hardest-hit villages, said the characteristics of flood water remained unpredictable as it receded and suddenly rose although Maguindanao experienced no rain.

"It could be raining up there in the mountains of South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat," he said, pointing at Daguma ranges south of Sultan Kudarat province.

Zenaida Sandig, 28, a resident of Barangay Paidung, said the water level in her village was at its highest late Saturday afternoon, reaching as high as five feet.

Sultan sa Barongis, a town situated in the borders of Maguindanao and Sultan Kudarat, is at the direct path of Ala river, a major tributary emanating from South Cotabato.

Flash flooding and landslides kill 23 in southeastern Bangladesh

At least 23 people have died in flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains that lashed southeastern Bangladesh, officials said today.

Tens of thousands of people were marooned on higher ground as flood waters submerged areas around Cox's Bazar and the hilly district of Bandarban.

Local police official Habibur Rahman confirmed the toll to reporters after four more bodies were recovered from a river.

Bangladesh - one of the world's most densely populated countries - is highly vulnerable to natural disasters, including cyclones, droughts, floods and earthquakes.

Flash flooding kills 9, leaves 6 others missing in northern Vietnam

Flash floods that occurred in the wake of Typhoon Kujira, which hit northeastern Vietnam on Wednesday, had killed nine people and injured six others as of Thursday, local authorities said.

Eight of the nine deaths occurred in Son La Province, the provincial Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention & Control and Search & Salvage said yesterday.

The victims were swept away in floodwaters created by downpours that came after the typhoon hit the area between Quang Ninh Province and Hai Phong City on Wednesday afternoon and then weakened into a tropical depression.

Three people are also missing in Thuan Chau and Moc Chau Districts in Son La, and six others were injured in other locales, the committee said.

Rescuers are searching for the three missing people.

Local authorities in Sochi, Russia, are struggling to cope with a flash flood that came after two days of torrential rain in the host city of last year's Winter Olympic Games.

The rain has intensified in the last few hours, with some local rivers rising as high as 1.2 meters above the norm, Interfax reported.

Videos from the region showed streets full of cars submerged by torrents of water.

Sochi International Airport reported that dispatching and accepting flights have been problematic due to the weather conditions and the flood.

Authorities in India's Gujarat state have asked people to move to higher grounds as incessant monsoon rains have triggered floods and house collapses.

Heavy rains have been battering the worst-affected region, where more than 50 people have died in flood-related incidents.

Nearly 10,000 people have been moved to higher ground, including 1,000 who were airlifted to safety.
India regularly witnesses severe floods during the monsoon season.

But the ferocity of this year's monsoon in Gujarat has surprised many, says the BBC Hindi's Ankur Jain in Ahmedabad, the main city in Gujarat.

3 killed and thousands affected by floods, landslides in Philippines

Three people were confirmed killed while around 800 others were displaced as flashfloods and landslides hit parts of South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat provinces early Wednesday.

Reports from local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) offices said the floods and landslides occurred following the almost non-stop heavy to moderate rains in the area that started Tuesday evening.

In South Cotabato, severe flooding was reported in the municipalities of Banga, Norala, Tantangan, Tupi, and Koronadal City due to the swelling of several rivers and tributaries.

Landslides were also reported in Barangays Bunao and Lunen in Tupi after a portion of a mountain in the area collapsed at the height of heavy rains early Wednesday.

Ira Aguinaldo, staff member of the Tupi Municipal DRRM Office (MDRRMO), said three casualties were reported in the landslide that hit a portion of Purok Tinago, Sitio Akmaon in Barangay Bunao.

Two of the casualties were identified as couple Nonoy and Monita Ga, who were both 74 years old.
