37 dead with 26 missing due to widespread floods and landslides in Nepal

Floods and landslides have swept across various parts of the country, leaving at least 37 people dead in the last 24 hours. Twenty-six others have gone missing while more than 2,000 houses are inundated.

Landslides and floods triggered by incessant rainfall have left 15 dead in Pyuthan district, seven in Gulmi, four in Palpa, three in Makwanpur, two in Udaypur, three in Baglung, one in Banke and two in Rupandehi. Hundreds of families have been displaced in various parts of the country.

Monsoon-triggered floods and landslides in Pyuthan claimed at least 15 lives. And at least 23 others in the district have gone missing. Over 200 households are at high risk of being swept away by flooding and landslides.


Among the deceased, five are from Lung VDC, two from Puja, and two others from Khawang. Shova Rijal and Kali Pariyar of Lung-6 were buried in landslide. Prem Thapa, 11, Ranjana KC, 40, and Sushila KC, 12, of Bahane Bajar were buried by landslide and later pronounced dead.

The death toll from torrential rain that has battered 10 provinces and 62 cities stood at 164 on Monday, with another 125 people missing, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

One more official was also suspended for alleged poor flood control measures in Hebei, where the disaster killed at least 130 ­people.

The latest official to be disciplined over alleged mismanagement of flood control and disaster relief was Guo Tongheng, deputy Communist Party secretary of Xingtai's Wangkuai township, Xingtai authorities said.

The announcement came after four officials from Xingtai, Shijiazhuang and Jingxing in Hebei province were suspended over mismanaging the flood response, pending the outcome of further investigation.


Comment: Aside from the humanitarian and environmental toll, and growing public outrage over the official handling of this latest flooding in China, provincial authorities stated recently that direct economic losses amounted to 16.3 billion yuan (2.5 billion U.S. dollars).

The overall flood situation continued to be grim in Assam with over six lakh people affected across 14 districts till Sunday evening while one person died in Lakhimpur on Sunday taking flood-related death toll to seven this year.

An Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) official said that the flood have inundated large areas in Tinsukia district on Sunday, besides Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Morigaon, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Sivsagar, Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Nagaon, Dhubri, Dibrugarh and Chirang districts, which have remained flooded since last few days.

"As on today (Sunday), 6,41,043 people in 1,206 villages in the 14 districts remained affected due to the current flash of floods. The concerned district administrations have opened 81 relief camps in the flood hit districts housing 21,931 marooned people," an ASDMA official said.

One person died due to floods in Lakhimpur district on Sunday, the ASDMA officials said. Two deaths - one in Lakhimpur and another in Morigaon - due to floods were reported on Saturday.

Some 8.6 million people have been affected by destructive floods and landslides caused by heavy rain in China, local media report. They add that at least 129 people have been killed and the death toll is likely to rise.

The worst-hit was Hebei province in northern China, Xinhua news agency reported. Some 52,000 homes collapsed in the area. Hebei has about 73 million residents.

At least 114 people have been killed and 111are still missing in the province, according to the People's Daily newspaper.

The city of Xingtai alone saw nine people killed, with 11 more unaccounted for.

Heavy rain in China has killed at least 87 people and forced 16 million from their homes, state media reported on Saturday.

Seventy-two people have been killed and 78 are missing in the northern province of Hebei after rain triggered floods and landslides, the Xinhua news agency reported, citing the civil affairs department.

Nearly 50,000 homes have collapsed and about 8.6 million people have been affected, it said.

In the central province of Henan, 15 people were killed and eight were missing after thunderstorms and strong winds forced 7.2 million people from their homes and damaged 18,000 houses,

Large parts of China have been inundated with rain this summer, killing more than 200 people.

More than 1.5 million hectares of crops have been damaged, leading to direct economic losses of more than 20 billion yuan ($3 billion), the government has said.

The National Disaster Management Division (NDMD) of the Ministry of Home Affairs in India reports that over 5 million people across 8 states are currently affected by flooding.

In a report dated 18 July, NDMD say that flooding in the country is affecting the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. NDMD say that 375 villages from 89 districts across the 8 states have reported flooding.

According to the report, 124 lives have been lost since the flooding began with the onset of this year's monsoon rainfall in June. Over 90 of the fatalities are believed to have occurred during the last 2 weeks. Around 200 people have also been reported as injured.

17 dead as flash floods sweep away 2 vehicles in Khost, Afghanistan

Flash floods have swept away two passenger vehicles in southeastern Khost province, killing at least 17 people, local officials said on Tuesday.

The floods caused the fatalities in Yaqubi district and Haroonkhel area on the outskirts of Khost City, the acting head of the Afghanistan natural disaster management authority said.

Shahdam Hilal told Pajhwok Afghan News the flooding had resulted from torrential rains in the province, where a flying coach carrying to Khost City was swept away in Haroonkhel area.

He said the dead included four women and as many children, coming from across the border to the Khost capital. Hilal added several people were killed and wounded in Yaqubi as well.

The sudden storm caused flooding in Novosibirsk's metro stations, city centre streets and shops - while the water opened cracks in asphalt large enough for vehicles to fall into. A waterfall was spotted close to the central railway station, a major stopover on the Trans-Siberian Railway.

'New tourist attraction,' quipped one online joker.

A rare tornado seen over Burmaistrovo village - the first in Novosibirsk region in more than 60 years, but the third in Siberia in two weeks - preceded the flash flooding in and around the city with a 1.51 population, the third largest in Russia. No injuries were reported from this rare phenomenon.

Around 5,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes after heavy rain caused floods in Nicaragua and Guatemala.

The heavy rain began to fall on 09 July, 2016. La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City recorded 360 mm of rain in 24 hours between 10 and 11 July. Flores in El Peten Department, Guatemala, recorded 170 mm during the same period.

Nicaragua

In Nicaragua, the Caribbean coast area was worst affected. Local media reports say that levels of the Prinzapolka, Escondido and Rio Grande de Matagalpa rose rapidly, threatening communities nearby. In the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region, around 4,000 people were evacuated and 300 homes damaged, mostly in the municipality of Prinzapolka.

A powerful thunderstorm hit Moscow shortly before midnight on Wednesday, with heavy rain instantly flooding streets and making waves on social media.

The heavy rain with hail and gale force wind was registered in the northwestern part of Moscow.

The thunderstorm halted traffic in many areas in the city due to the zero-visibility conditions it brought, RIA-Novosti reported.
