Dozens of dead birds found in Cincinnati, Ohio

Image
Dead robins
Nearly a dozen dead robins could be seen Tuesday around Paul Brown Stadium. On the walkway off Central Avenue and West Pete Rose Way five lifeless birds could easily be spotted, just below the expressway.

"Carbon-monoxide poisoning, maybe the trucks and stuff coming across and it builds up," said Wild Birds Unlimited General Manager, Chris Sweigard. He said the birds most likely roost in pockets of the expressway to protect themselves from the weather and to stay warm.

Bird experts at the Cincinnati Zoo said the robins are also victims of the harsh winter, and the stress of the weather and lack of food can kill them.

Photos offer first-ever evidence of male tigers as family men

Male Amur tigers are generally thought to live a solitary existence; however, a new series of photographs released by the Wildlife Conservation Society has revealed a family of wild Amur tigers with an adult male with family.

The photos are from a camera trap slideshow and they reveal the "tiger dad" passing through a Russian forest along with an adult female and three cubs. Researchers note this is the first observation this kind of social behavior. The WCS also released a photo composite of a sequence of images showing the whole family as they wandered past the camera trap over the course of two minutes.

"Although WCS's George Schaller documented sporadic familial groups of Bengal tigers as early as the 1960s, this is the first time such behavior has been photographed for Amur tigers in the wild," said Dale Miquelle, the director of WCS Russia. "These photos provide a small vignette of social interactions of Amur tigers, and provide an evocative snapshot of life in the wild for these magnificent animals."

Brutal winter takes toll on wildlife around New York

Wildlife rehabilitators say that animals - mainly waterfowl, owls, hawks and some mammals - are under serious stress due to the cold winter.

Two months of snow cover and brutal bouts of arctic air are endangering wildlife.

Wildlife rehabilitators say that animals โ€” mainly waterfowl, owls, hawks and some mammals โ€” are under serious stress. Many have starved because their food sources have been covered with snow and ice and the water they need to survive has been frozen.

"It's been a really hard, long, cold, desperate and brutal winter for wildlife," said Taffy Williams, a wildlife rehabilitator from Yonkers. "A lot of raptors, hawks and owls are being found dead."

Animals have been foraging in places they usually don't โ€” risky places such as urban streets or sun-warmed banks along parkways.

Feral dogs in India
In a chilling replay of dogs attacking children in Bareilly, which has become a serious menace in the district, a 10-year-old was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs here on Sunday, police said.

The child, Mohd Kaif, was playing with his friend, 11-year-old Ayaan, in a park near his house in Gulistaan colony in Jalalabad kasba at 8am when the incident occurred. Residents said they heard the children shouting and rushed to their aid, but it was already too late. Kaif was killed on the spot while his Ayaan escaped with minor injuries.

Zeeshan Ali, a resident of the colony, said the dogs were from a nearby plywood factory. The residents of the colony protested outside the factory and blocked traffic, before police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

A pit bull attacked and killed a man who was trying to help the dog's ill owner in a home in East Wheeling, W.Va., authorities said.

Wheeling police and other emergency responders were called to the home late Sunday night regarding a dog attack and had to force their way into the residence, where they found both victims.

One victim was badly injured; the other person was unconscious. Both were taken to local hospitals, where they were pronounced dead, police said. Their names have not been released.

Wheeling police Lt. Phil Redford says police believe the dog's owner suffered a heart attack and that the other man was attacked by the dog as he tried to resuscitate the owner.

Animal control officers removed the pit bull from the home and it has been quarantined.

No further information was released.

A dog fell into a sinkhole that opened up right under its tiny feet in Rockwell Park on Wednesday, according to a witness.

The park, which sits at the intersection of N. Cleveland, Edgewood and 1st Streets, is popular for dog walking in the Lyon Park neighborhood. Resident Elsie Frasier told ARLnow.com that two days ago she and her husband "heard someone screaming" at the park from their adjacent house. Someone walking their dog said it had fallen into the hole.

"We initially thought she was talking about the storm sewer openings, and only later, when we went out to the park, did we find out that a sinkhole had opened up right under her dog while they were out for a walk," Frasier told ARLnow.com in an email. "The dog was on a leash so she was able to haul it out herself."

The dog was unhurt from the fall, Frasier said.

One of the smallest whales species, pygmy sperm, was found around 120 nautical miles southwest of Karachi. The fishermen caught the whale on Wednesday while they were fishing in the deep sea but the whale was already dead.

This is one of the smallest whales found in the outer continental shelf and considered to be very rare. Known to exist in the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic oceans, this species is usually found dead on the shores.

The captain of the boat alFahim, Saeed Zaman, caught the pygmy sperm in gillnet used for catching tuna while they were fishing off the shelf area. The whale was enmeshed in the net and died when it was hauled onto the boat.

Dolphins continue to die 5 years after the Deepwater Horizon disaster

A new government-funded study attributes the high rate of marine mammal deaths in part to the BP oil spill.

Dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico continue to die at high rates five years after the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, according to a new government-funded study.

The report, published in the journal PLOS One, could have a significant impact on how money the petroleum giant must pay to restore the Gulf will be used to save imperiled dolphins.

The study "indicates that the current multi-year marine mammal unusual mortality event (UME) in the Northern Gulf of Mexico has multiple groupings of high bottlenose dolphin mortalities and may be due to different contributing factors, including the Deepwater Horizon oil spill," National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officials said in a statement.

Update: Elephant returns to Nepal after trampling six to death

Image
Charging elephant
The wild elephant, which trampled six persons to death and seriously injured four others in Sitamarhi and Madhubani districts of Bihar over the last two days, returned to its natural habitat in Nepal during the wee hours today.

Additional Chief Conservator of Forest and Chief Wildlife Warden (CWW) S S Chaudhari said, "We successfully managed to send the wild tusker back to Nepal. It crossed the Royal Canal at the international border near Jainagar in Madhubani district at around 2.30 AM. We verified this with its footprints."

The elephant had strayed from its herd based at Parsa Wildlife Sanctuary in the neighbouring country during the ongoing mating season, after perhaps losing in a fight with some other tusker and entered Sitamarhi district on Tuesday last.
