Woman killed in dog attack in her own home in Colorado City

mmmmmm
A woman is dead after she was the victim of a dog attack in her southern Colorado home.

The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a call at a home on Jefferson Boulevard in Colorado City Monday night and found a 76-year-old woman who was unresponsive. Colorado City is located south of Pueblo and north of Walsenburg.

There were several dogs loose in her home and a dozen or more dogs in cages, they said in an update Friday. They're attributing her death to a dog attack.

The sheriff's office said they worked with Animal Law Enforcement to seize "numerous" dogs from the home and a related property.

The woman's name will be released by the Pueblo County Coroner's Office.

Alberta is experiencing an 'invasion' of northern owls: expert

Great grey owl sightings in central and southern Alberta have spiked this winter in an invasion, or irruption, caused by weather conditions and food availability.
© Amir SaidGreat grey owl sightings in central and southern Alberta have spiked this winter in an invasion, or irruption, caused by weather conditions and food availability.
Sightings of rare owls are on the rise in Alberta, which has many dubbing it Owlberta.

Great grey owls and northern hawk owls, two enigmatic species that are typically difficult to find, are now being seen at an unusually high rate in Alberta, with social media and the internet flooded with photos of them over the last few months.

There's a scientific reason behind the sudden surge in sightings, according to STRIX Ecological Consulting biologist Lisa Takats Priestley.

"We are experiencing an invasion of great grey owls and northern hawk owls in central and southern Alberta," said Priestley, who is Birds Canada's coordinator of the Alberta nocturnal owl population survey.

The invasion, known by researchers as an irruption, is a phenomenon that has brought these birds from remote locations to more developed areas in droves.

A wild elephant fatally attacked a German tourist riding a two-wheeler while he was passing through the Tiger Valley hill road near Valparai, on Tuesday evening, officials said.

The onlookers rescued the tourist identified as Micheal Jurcen from the elephant and rushed him to a Waterfall Garden Hospital in Anamalai Tiger Reserve Valparai where he was administered first aid. He was referred to Pollachi Government Hospital for higher care and was shifted to Pollachi by a state-run ambulance service.

Doctors said the German national did not respond to the treatment and succumbed to the injuries later in the hospital.

Police officials identified the tourist as Michael, 77, who has been touring India.

Police said the incident occurred when the tourist was passing through a stretch of the hill road, ignoring the wild tusker's presence.

A teenage girl has died after being attacked by a shark in Queensland, Australia.

Paramedics responded to reports of a "serious shark bite incident" at Woorim Beach, just north of Brisbane, around 16:45 local time (06:45 GMT) on Monday, Queensland Ambulance Service wrote on X.

Police confirmed that the girl had suffered life-threatening injuries and died shortly after 17:00. Australian media reports that she was 17 years old.

The waters around the beach are home to many sharks, but the attack occurred close to shore in the popular surfing spot, which has measures to protect against sharks.

Police confirmed the girl had been swimming in the waters off Bribie Island - just off the mainland, on which Woorim Beach sits - when she was attacked by the shark, the species of which has not been identified.

The local fire brigade rushed to the scene around 3.30pm and tried to save the baby, but the 11-month-old died of the serious injuries inflicted by the Belgian Malinois shepherd.

A pod of killer whales made an unexpected visit off the coast of Orange County Thursday.

The pod of CA56 killer whales (orcas) was spotted by a Davey's Locker whale-watching boat about 12:30 p.m. just two and a half miles from Newport Beach harbor.

Video showed the whales getting remarkably close to the boat as the passengers and crewmembers looked on.

This particular pod of orcas is rarely seen, with Thursday's sighting believed to be the furthest southern documented sighting, Davey's Locker & Newport Landing spokesperson Jessica Rodriguez said.

A miles-long cluster of dolphins has been filmed leaping and gliding across Carmel Bay off the central coast of California, forming an unusual "super pod" of more than 1,500 of the marine creatures.

"They were on the horizon I feel like as far as I could see," said Captain Evan Brodsky, with the Monterey Bay Whale Watch, who captured drone footage of Friday's huge gathering of Risso's dolphins.

The sighting was rare, as Risso's dolphins typically travel in groups of only 10 to 30 animals, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.

From an about 6m-long inflatable boat, Brodsky and a small team out searching for gray whales watched mesmerized as the dolphins jumped out of the bay, peeking around as they leaped in the air. This type of dolphin with its stocky body and bulbous head can weigh as much as 499kg and reach up to 3.9m long.

Man killed in rhino attack in Assam, India

nnnnn
A 56-year-old man was killed in a rhino attack near Kaziranga National Park on Tuesday. The victim, identified as Bikram Lohar, was attacked by the animal while on his regular morning walk near National Highway 37 in the Haltikhuli-Haldibari area, close to the park.

Lohar suffered severe injuries from the attack and was rushed to Shaheed Kamala Miri Sub-Divisional Civil Hospital in Bokakhat. However, despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.

This incident raises concerns about the increasing human-wildlife conflict in the region. Just a month ago, a similar attack by a rhino resulted in the death of a 30-year-old man in the same area. Local residents are now urging authorities to take immediate action to prevent further tragedies.

Kaziranga National Park, known for its population of endangered one-horned rhinoceroses, has witnessed a rise in such encounters between wildlife and humans, prompting calls for enhanced safety measures for both locals and animals.

59-year-old trampled to death by an elephant in Kruger National Park, South Africa

mmmmmm
A grandfather tragically lost his life near Kruger National Park's Malelane gate on January 25 while attempting to save his grandson from a charging elephant. The victim, identified as 59-year-old Shaik Adam Shabir Ammed, was with his two grandchildren, aged five and 11, when the incident occurred.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane of the South African Police Service in Malelane, the children had been taking pictures and videos of an elephant inside the park when it suddenly charged toward them. As the family tried to escape, the 11-year-old fell, and the elephant attacked his legs with its trunk. "It was during this time when the grandfather went to assist that the elephant turned and trampled on him before it left them and returned to the Kruger National Park premises," Ndubane said.

Sadly, Ammed succumbed to his injuries on site before police and emergency services arrived. The 11-year-old boy sustained leg injuries but survived the attack, while his five-year-old sister escaped unharmed.

Animal attacks have always happened, even where they are monitored closely. In recent years there have been some particularly high-profile incidents that brought the issue into the spotlight.
