Cars have become stuck in over two foot of snow in the Peak District as mountain rescue are sent to cut off roads to help stranded motorists.
Up to 40cm of snow expected in Peak District and Pennines, with warning of 'exceptionally cold night' on Friday.

Snow and rain are expected to bring further travel disruption across large areas of Britain on Friday.

Three amber warnings for blizzard conditions with up to 40cm (15.7in) of snow were issued by the Met Office on Thursday and remain in place until Friday morning.

The snow devil is an rare sight.
A Shetland farmer has captured a rare "snow devil' on video whilst out feeding his sheep.

Michael Peterson from Sandness on the west of Shetland's mainland spotted the weather phenomenon on Tuesday afternoon.

Despite usually appearing in mountainous areas, Mr Peterson sighted it while out in his van with his wife Frances.


Comment: Usually?! Or 'very rare'? Which is it?!


According to the World Meteorological Organisation a snow devil occurs when snow is raised from the group in a whirling column.


Comment: Raised from the what?? From the dead?!


It describes the phenomenon as "very rare", and explains it is otherwise known as a "snownado".


Comment: So much for the 'cyclonic-events-are-formed-when-hot-air-meets-cold' theory.

Chalk this up to more unusual electrical activity taking place in and on the planet.

Death toll rises in Southern California mountains after blizzards, at least 11 people dead

As mountain communities in Southern California gradually emerge from piles of snow, officials are starting the difficult task of assessing the damage and the number of people who have died.

At least four people were found dead in their homes in the Big Bear area of San Bernardino County, the first one on March 2, said Shannon Dicus, the county sheriff and coroner, on Wednesday.

But the total number of dead could climb. Sheriff Dicus said that at least 11 people had died in the region since Feb. 23, including those who were receiving care at Bear Valley Community Hospital. How many of those deaths are directly related to the snowstorms, however, is unclear because his office has not provided more information on the circumstances involved and is still reviewing the cases.

Sheriff Dicus's office so far has only attributed to the storm the death of a 39-year-old woman who was killed in a hit-and-run traffic collision on Feb. 26.

After back-to-back winter storms overwhelmed many of California's mountain communities with snow, another round of snowfall is headed to the Sierra Nevada region, while the state's hard-hit southern San Bernardino County will get a reprieve as some residents who remain trapped by walls of snow are concerned about their dwindling supplies.

The Sierra Nevada mountain range could see 1 to 3 inches of snow through Tuesday, following a weekend that brought as much as 38 inches of snow over a 24-hour period to Soda Springs in Nevada County and 31 inches to Donner Peak in Placer County.

After an incredible series of winter storms, California officials reported Friday the state's snowpack is the largest in decades.

Snowpack in the California Sierra is 177% of normal for this time of year, officials at the Department of Water Resources said. Statewide, snowpack is averaging 190% compared to normal for the date — a significant boost after back-to-back storms.

Snowpack in the Sierra Nevada is critical because it acts as a natural reservoir and accounts for 30% of California's freshwater supply in an average year. The recent record-breaking, three-week deluge helped replenish some of the state's reservoirs, but Shasta Lake — the largest in the state — remains below its historical average.

Avalanches hit Hokkaido, Japan - one dead

A series of avalanches has occurred in Hokkaido, northern Japan, as sunny weather pushed up temperatures. A backcountry skier has died and another skier has gone missing.

Police received a call at around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday from a family saying one of its members had gone missing while backcountry skiing at Mount Yotei.

Police found a man buried in snow. He was taken to a hospital but died.

Police say an avalanche appears to have occurred at a site where the 35-year-old was found.

A group of 9 skiers and a guide were caught in an avalanche near Invermere, B.C. Wednesday. Three people died and four others were injured.
Three German tourists from Bavaria are dead, the victims of one of the most dangerous avalanche seasons of recent memory in British Columbia.

The trio were part of a nine-person heli-ski group that took off early Wednesday to explore an area near Panorama Mountain Resort near Invermere, B.C.

The skiers triggered the slide, according to avalanche experts, and despite having avalanche training and a guide on hand, three were unable to get out of it.

Rescue teams on the scene at Black Crater, Oregon, where a backcountry skier was killed on Thursday.
On March 2, 2023, The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue unit was dispatched to a report of an avalanche at Black Crater, Oregon. Black Crater is a steep-sided shield volcano in the Cascade Range, located north of the Three Sisters and east of McKenzie Pass.

The reporting party (skier#2) advised Deschutes County 911 he and a friend were skiing in the caldera at Black Crater when an avalanche was triggered. Skier #1 was caught up in the avalanche and no longer visible and possibly injured.

Both skiers were equipped with proper backcountry safety items including avalanche beacons, shovels, helmets, and avalanche probes. The reporting party attempted to locate his friend by utilizing his avalanche beacon and ultimately was successful. Life-saving measures were conducted, however, skier #1 succumbed to his injuries.

Residents in the Southern California are pleading for more help as some remain in an increasingly desperate situation after a massive snowstorm overwhelmed the area.

AIR7 HD, from our sister station, ABC7 Los Angeles, flew over the Lake Gregory area of Crestline Friday afternoon and captured a large message written out in the snow that read "HELP US!!"

Despite facing treacherous roads, aerial footage showed dozens of residents lined up at a food distribution outside a Crestline grocery store where the roof had collapsed earlier in the week.

At least 13 people have died in multiple states due to severe weather across the country as a powerful storm system that brought golf ball-sized hail and tornadoes to the South continues to march Saturday across the Northeast.

The storm spurred wind gusts strong enough to topple tractor-trailer trucks, leaving more than 1 million people without power and threatening to bring more torrential rain, tornadoes and heavy snow.

The storm system is the same that dumped feet of snow across parts of California, leaving some trapped in their homes with snow piled as high as second-story windows and prompting the governor to declare a state of emergency in 13 counties. Many of those affected are now bracing for another round of snow and rain on Saturday from a new system.

At least five Kentuckians have died in connection with the severe weather that hit the area Friday, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said during a news briefing on Saturday.
