The 2.9 quake struck at 8:37 AM GMT at a depth of 11.6 km. The epicentre was located a few kilometres south of Lochailort, a hamlet that lies at the head of Loch Ailort. Three tremors were recorded on Sunday, measuring 1.4 (11:13 AM), 0.9 (11:16 AM) and 2.0 (18:24 AM) on the Richter Scale. A further three tremors were recorded by the BGS on Monday.
The BGS reported that the largest of the quakes was felt in Lochailort, Glenfinnan and Acharacle.
Reports received by the BGS included: "there was a bang, then a rumbling, almost like a distant explosion"; "rumble lasted for two or three seconds with a distinct thump"; and "it was the loudest and most severe we've witnessed since living here but thankfully the shortest".
The 6.0-magnitude earthquake at 8.23 p.m. local time (1123 GMT) was centered about 113 kilometers (70 miles) east-southeast of Miko, the capital city of Ibaraki Prefecture. It struck about 30 kilometers (18 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
Tremors with an intensity of 3 on the Japanese seismic scale of 0 to 7 were felt in several areas along the coast, which was heavily damaged by a massive quake and tsunami in March. Light shaking was also felt in Tokyo, the country's capital, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS), which measured the strength of the earthquake at 5.9 on the Richter scale, estimated that some 4 million people may have felt light shaking. "There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage," the USGS said.

Ten minutes ago, at roughly 2:43 PM PST, a 3.2 earthquake struck Los Angeles County. Its epicenter was south east of Long Beach. Unlike previous earthquakes this year in the region, today's quake was not centered out in the Pacific Ocean.
Rather initial statements by USGS issued to news indicate that the quake was centered just a few blocks west of Pacific Coast Highway. Initial reports put the quake centered closest to the intersection of E7th Street and Park Avenue. It was centered apparently just north of the American Golf Pro Shops on the 9th Hole of the local Recreation Park Golf Course, near the East 7th street corridor.
