A golden jackal was rescued in Vikhroli (E) last evening, three weeks after mid-day reported (on May 3) how the animal was driving terror into the hearts of residents.

Three men in Ghatkopar's pumping house were attacked early May. Two of the victims suffered injuries on their hands while trying to shield themselves from the animals, where as the third victim's lips were injured.

BMC guard Chetan Patil was the first victim. He was on duty around 1 pm on Monday when, "Suddenly from nowhere, I was attacked by an animal. I couldn't understand what was happening. The animal jumped around 4 feet in the air to attack me," said Chetan.

Minke whale discovered dead on Hamptons beach, New York

Minke Whale Found Dead on Hamptons Beach
Minke whale found dead on Hamptons beach
A 12-foot Minke whale was found dead the morning after marine biologists and authorities refloated it when it was found beached in Hampton Bays on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

A fisherman found the dead whale washed up on the marsh at Shinnecock County Park and reported the discovery to Southampton Town Bay Constables shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society (AMCS), a nonprofit group that responds to dolphin and whale strandings on Long Island.

"They have confirmed this is the same Minke whale that had been re-floated yesterday in Shinnecock Bay," said Rachel Bosworth, an AMCS spokeswoman.

The whale will be taken to another location, where AMCS experts will perform a necropsy to determine its cause of death.

Five orcas have died after six were stranded at Cape Runaway in the eastern Bay of Plenty yesterday.

Four of the pod were already dead when the Department of Conservation were called about 2pm to the remote settlement of Whangaparaoa Bay.

Locals refloated one of the remaining two yesterday afternoon and they kept a second, larger beast alive overnight.

However it did not survive.

The department's operation manager Jade King-Hazel said officials remained in contact with local Joe Rua who had previous experience with whale strandings.

Bad weather prevented a small response team flying to the area by helicopter.

Melting snowpack poses dangers in California's Sierra Nevada

© The Weather Channel
The Sierra Nevada snowpack experienced accelerated melting early this week as very warm temperatures gripped the region, raising the risk of several dangers.

Snowpack in the Sierra from this past winter was still well above average to begin May. The SNOTEL network estimated water content of the snowpack in the Sierra was still from three to six times the average for the week before Memorial Day.

With well-above-average temperatures in place early this week, melting of that snowpack was accelerated.

The Walker River in western Nevada had been forecast to top a record, which could have caused significant property damage near the towns of Mason and Yerington. As of Monday, the forecast crest for the river had been reduced based on new data, with minor to moderate flooding now expected.

Preparations for the potential flooding are being encouraged. Sandbagging efforts are underway and crews are working to build up levees in Yerington, according to posts on the Lyon County, Nevada, Facebook page.

At $1.4 billion, recent hailstorm could be most expensive in Colorado history

The ferocious hailstorm that battered the Denver area earlier this month, pummeling cars and houses, may end up as the costliest ever recorded in Colorado, insurance officials said.

The Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association estimates the preliminary insurance losses to be at about $1.4 billion, which would exceed the $845.5 million storm of July 20, 2009, and the $1.1 billion storm of July 11, 1990, after costs are adjusted to reflect the current dollar.

The hail damage led to more than an estimated 150,000 auto insurance claims and 50,000 homeowners insurance claims to be filed, according to KUSA-TV.

"The enormous size of the hail hitting densely populated areas of the Denver-Metro during rush hour contributed to the magnitude of damage caused by this storm," Carole Walker of the insurance association told KUSA.

Comment: Other severe hailstorms from around the world in recent months include: It is likely that atmospheric dust loading from increased comet and volcanic activity is contributing to these 'unusual' or 'freak' hailstorms, the cooling effect of which causes ice crystals to form.

Unexpected and extremely loud bang rocks awake residents of Sydney, Australia

Fog rolls through Sydney Harbour

Nervous Sydneysiders thought the worst when they were rocked awake in the early hours by a mystery — and extremely loud — bang.

Steph, from Sydney's lower North Shore told news.com.au "I genuinely thought the Harbour Bridge had blown up it was so loud. The apartment building shook and the blinds fell down in our lounge room. My sister lives a block away and texted me to ask if I'd heard an explosion too."

People on Twitter were equally nervous. "Heard a massive explosion from Sydney Harbour. What is going on?" one Tweet, reflective of many, said. "What the hell was that sound over Sydney?" said another. "Wtf was that? It sounded like an explosion right next to me.

Others wondered if it could have been a plane crash or, in the wake of Monday's attack in Manchester, an altogether more sinister event.

ABC News TV presenter Juanita Phillips even took to twitter to tell Sydney she'd driven down to the Harbour Bridge, "with the intention of helping the injured".

Cold Butt at Crater Lake, Oregon

crater lake oregon
Last week I posted an article about the eruption of Oregon's Mount Mazama some 7,700 years ago that formed Crater Lake. What I didn't mention is that I was visiting the area at the time. This is what it it looked like on May 18, 2017. Brrrr!

After visiting the Mt. Shasta area to photograph Whitney Glacier (which is growing, by the way), I decided to drive north to Bend, Oregon. According to the map, it looked like I could easily drive along the west side of Crater Lake.

Oops. Maybe not.

As I got closer and closer to the lake, the snowbanks got higher and higher. Can you even see the automobile in this photo?

Los Angeles' climate has been stable for 50,000 years

Fossil beetles suggest that LA climate has been relatively stable for 50,000 years

New radiocarbon dating of La Brea Tar Pits beetles indicates that Southern California's Paleoclimate was very similar to today

Research based on more than 180 fossil insects preserved in the La Brea Tar Pits of Los Angeles indicate that the climate in what is now southern California has been relatively stable over the past 50,000 years.

The La Brea Tar Pits, which form one of the world's richest Ice Age fossil sites, is famous for specimens of saber-toothed cats, mammoths, and giant sloths, but their insect collection is even larger and offers a relatively untapped treasure trove of information. The new study, published today in the journal Quaternary Science Reviews, is based on an analysis of seven species of beetles and offers the most robust environmental analysis for southern California to date.

"Despite La Brea's significance as one of North America's premier Late Pleistocene fossil localities, there remain large gaps in our understanding of its ecological history," said lead author Anna Holden, a graduate student at the American Museum of Natural History's Richard Gilder Graduate School and a research associate at the La Brea Tar Pits and Museum. "Recent advances are now allowing us to reconstruct the region's paleoenvironment by analyzing a vast and previously under-studied collection from the tar pits: insects."
