An avalanche in Italy's Dolomite mountains has killed five German climbers, including a 17-year-old girl and her father, according to rescuers.

The mountaineers, travelling in separate groups, were scaling Cima Vertana in the Ortler Alps at around 16:00 local time on Saturday when the fast-moving snow hit.

A group of three people "was fully swept away by the avalanche" and all died, said Italy's Alpine rescue service, Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico.

Separately, the father and daughter were carried away by the avalanche and their bodies were recovered on Sunday. Two other climbers in a third party survived.

The alarm was raised by the survivors, triggering the rescue operation.

It tied for the sixth strongest on record.

6.3 magnitude earthquake kills at least 20 as it strikes northern Afghanistan

mmmmm
A magnitude 6.3 earthquake has killed at least 20 people as it struck northern Afghanistan near the city of Mazar-i-Sharif.

The Taliban Ministry of Public Health reported the death toll on Monday, raising the estimate as search efforts began. A further 320 people are reported to have been injured.

The disaster adds to the list of deadly quakes to hit the country since the Taliban took power in 2021, which has tested the movement's capacity to govern as foreign aid dwindles. Just two months ago, an earthquake in the east killed more than 2,000.

The quake struck at 12:59am on Monday (20:29 GMT) at a depth of 28km (17 miles) near Mazar-i-Sharif, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Health Ministry spokesman Sharafat Zaman stressed to journalists that the death toll of 20 was only preliminary.

At least 13 people have died and dozens have been displaced as heavy rains continue to pound several parts of the country, triggering landslides, flash floods, and widespread destruction.

In a statement on Saturday, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration said the ongoing October - November - December short rains have caused "tragic loss of life, injuries, and destruction of property" in multiple counties.

The worst-hit area is Machember Sub-location in Mukurtwo, where a massive landslide struck on Friday night following intense rainfall. "So far, 13 bodies have been retrieved, while search and rescue efforts continue under difficult conditions," the ministry said.

Nineteen survivors have been rescued, while several others are receiving treatment at Chesongoch Mission Hospital.

Comment: Update November 2

Anadolu Ajansı reports:
The death toll from a landslide in Kenya's Rift Valley has risen to 26, as rescue teams continue searching for dozens of people still reported missing following heavy rains, the country's interior minister said on Sunday.

Kipchumba Murkomen told reporters that 26 people have been found dead and 25 others are still missing.

The landslide occurred early Saturday in the Elgeyo Marakwet East region, which is in its rainy season and lies 320 kilometers (200 miles) northwest of the East African nation's capital, Nairobi.

Murkomen said on Saturday that preparations were underway to deliver more food and non-food relief to affected families, with military and police helicopters on standby to assist in transportation.

Authorities have appealed to residents in high-risk zones to heed evacuation warnings as rescue operations continue in Elgeyo Marakwet.

Recent heavy rainfall has caused flooding and landslides across several counties, displacing hundreds and damaging key infrastructure.
