Hawaii’s Mount Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes on Earth launched jets of molten lava skywards during a spectacular eruption.
Lava began bubbling Monday through the crust of one of the world's most active volcanoes — Kilauea, on Hawaii's Big Island.

The eruption was confined to the volcano's summit caldera, in a remote, closed area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the Hawaii Volcano Observatory reported. Increased earthquake activity began at about 2 a.m. local time and within about half an hour webcam images began to show lava emerging through fissures in the caldera or spurting in fountains.

The most immediate threat was from volcanic smog that could reach homes downwind, the observatory said. Such "vog" contains sulfur dioxide and can worsen symptoms for people who have conditions like asthma, other respiratory issues or cardiovascular disease.

The area where the eruption is occurring has been closed to the public since 2007 due to hazards that include crater wall instability, ground cracking and rockfalls.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park encompasses the summits of two of the world's most active volcanoes: Kilauea and Mauna Loa. Kilauea also erupted in June and September.

As bushfires rage out of control in Victoria and parts of Queensland count the cost of recent floods, residents in the NSW Snowy Mountains and Tasmania woke this morning to find snow on the ground.

The Bureau of Meteorology had forecast snow to fall above 1,700 metres in the NSW alps today, but some locals have reported sightings of snow flurries as low as Cooma at 800m elevation.

Further south, snowfields in Tasmania recorded up to 5 centimetres of snow down to 1,500 metres.

Errol Hanlon from the Thredbo Alpine Museum said snow settled on shady ground, car windscreens, back decks and some rooftops around the village.

"We definitely woke up to a snow flurry," he said.

A number of highways and residents' houses in the Kuta District, Badung Regency, Bali, were submerged in floodwaters due to high rainfall on Sunday, the 22nd of December.

Denpasar Police Public Relations Chief, AKP I Ketut Sukadi, said the flooding and waterlogging in the Kuta area were caused by high rainfall over a long duration from the previous Saturday to the following Sunday. The water channels were unable to accommodate the rainwater.

"The cause [of the floods] is very high rainfall with a long duration evenly distributed in the Bali area," said Sukadi to the press on Sunday afternoon.

Sukadi further explained that on Sunday morning, around 07:30 local time, monitoring and data collection had been carried out regarding the natural disaster caused by heavy rain throughout the day in the Kuta area. Government officials have deployed water pumps to remove the floodwaters and have also regulated traffic flow.

40-year-old 'mega' iceberg — the largest on Earth — is on the move after being trapped in a giant vortex for months

The world's largest iceberg is on the move again after escaping from a giant vortex that caused it to spin in place for months. This is the big berg's second great escape in as many years, after breaking free from the seafloor where it was stuck for 37 years in 2023.

Scientists are now closely monitoring the icy slab's slow march toward oblivion in hopes of learning more about the temporary hidden ecosystem it may support.

A23a, which is often dubbed a "megaberg," has a surface area roughly three times larger than New York City and weighs just under 1 trillion tons. It first broke off from Antarctica's Filchner Ice Shelf in 1986 but became trapped on the seafloor just a few miles offshore, which has significantly slowed its melt rate. Over the last few decades, it has held the title of "world's largest iceberg" on multiple occasions, most recently since May 2023, when the previous largest berg — A-76A — broke apart.
