Japan's Shinmoedake volcano erupts, sending ash 3,000 metres into sky

mmmmmm
A powerful eruption at Japan's Shinmoedake volcano sent an ash plume more than 3,000 metres high on Sunday morning, prompting safety warnings from authorities.

The eruption occurred at around 5:23 a.m. local time in the Kirishima mountain range, on the border between Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures, according to local media. The volcano has been erupting intermittently since 27 June.

Japan's national broadcaster NHK said ash from Sunday's eruption is drifting northeast and could reach as far as Takanabe in Miyazaki Prefecture. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned that moderate ashfall is expected in Kobayashi and Takaharu in Miyazaki Prefecture, as well as in Kirishima, Kagoshima Prefecture.

The JMA also cautioned that small volcanic rocks could fall within about 14 kilometres northeast of the crater. The eruption alert level remains at 3, with residents advised to watch for large volcanic rocks within 3 kilometres and pyroclastic flows within 2 kilometres of the crater.

Shinmoedake is part of the Kirishima volcanic group and has a history of periodic eruptions, with the last significant activity recorded in 2018. Authorities are monitoring conditions closely and urging residents and visitors to remain vigilant.

An intense spell of rain lashed Hyderabad on Thursday evening, submerging roads, stranding vehicles and prompting a flash flood alert across the city. The deluge disrupted normal life, particularly in the western corridor, home to the city's IT sector. Gachibowli recorded the highest rainfall in the city at 126.5 mm by 8 pm. Across the state, Nalgonda reported 127.3 mm.

The downpour, akin to a cloudburst with rainfall crossing 100 mm per hour, overwhelmed drainage systems and raised concerns over flash floods in low-lying zones. Weather stations operated by the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TGDPS) indicated the rain might continue through the night.

Dramatic waterspout off Havana, Cuba

mmmmmm
A visually striking waterspout emerged off the coast of Havana this Friday, right in front of the iconic Malecón, causing moments of alarm and confusion among those in the area. This weather phenomenon, also known as a marine funnel, took shape around 1:30 p.m. under a cloud-laden sky filled with heat, humidity, and climatic instability—conditions that typically give rise to such meteorological events.

Social media was flooded with videos and photographs capturing the awe-inspiring column of rotating air that momentarily connected the sea with the sky, creating a natural spectacle that was both beautiful and tense. Witnesses described feeling both astonished and concerned, with some opting to move away from the coast as a precaution.

Journalist Boris Luis Cabrera Acosta confirmed that the waterspout did not cause any material damage or injuries and dissipated shortly after forming, never making landfall.

Cyclist was in the Alpine Capone area along Brohm Ridge Thursday evening when the cougar began to pursue him

A cougar that attacked a mountain biker near Squamish and Garibaldi Provincial Park Thursday evening has prompted the B.C. Conservation Officer Service (COS) to issue a warning to the public to avoid the area.

COS says the man was cycling in the Alpine Capone area along Brohm Ridge at 6:30 p.m. when the cougar began to "pursue" him.

"The cougar made contact and continued to follow him down the trail for approximately 20 minutes. The man, who was walking backwards holding his bike, managed to throw rocks at the cougar, which disengaged," said a statement from COS.

The man received minor injuries.

The incident happened near the location where aggressive cougar activity led to trails being closed earlier this summer. COS says it is unable to confirm if the same animal is involved.

People are being asked to take precautions to avoid cougar encounters by staying in groups, making noise, keeping pets on a leash and carrying bear spray.
