Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport suspended operations for several hours Sunday after heavy rains flooded the capital and caused poor visibility, authorities said.

"Due to the heavy rainfall this afternoon and based on reports of low visibility... the aeronautical authority has ordered the suspension of landing and takeoff operations for the next 3 hours," the airport's official X account posted before 9:00 pm local time (0300 GMT).

"This will allow for the removal of rainwater that has caused flooding, enabling the restoration of operational capacity," it said.

Benito Juarez International Airport, one of the city's two international airports, is among Latin America's busiest, serving 45.4 million passengers in 2024.

Sunday's rainfall flooded major roads in Mexico City, with water reaching up to 50 centimetres (19 inches) in some areas.

Nine volunteers were killed and three others injured when a landslide buried them during restoration of a flood-damaged water channel in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir's Gilgit region, officials said on Monday.

The incident occurred on Sunday night in Danyor Nullah when a mass of earth collapsed on the workers, trapping several under the debris, police said.

An emergency was declared in local hospitals as rescue operations were launched with the help of residents.

Hospital authorities confirmed nine deaths and warned that more people could be trapped. The injured were receiving treatment, they said.

In a separate incident, flash floods in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir triggered by a glacial lake outburst from the Shishper Glacier last Friday swept away a section of the Karakoram Highway linking Pakistan with China.

A tourist from Kerala miraculously survived a wild elephant attack in Karnataka's Bandipur Tiger Reserve after the tusker charged at him, pushed him to the ground, and was pinned under the elephant's foot but managed to escape with injuries after the animal retreated.

A video of the incident, now viral, shows the elephant standing on a road crowded with vehicles and people before suddenly charging at the tourist, who was walking on foot along the roadside.

On spotting the wild elephant, the man is seen running for his life. After a brief pursuit, the man stumbled and fell, at which point the elephant stepped on him.

At around 5:42 p.m. local time on Sunday, Aug. 10, deputies were called to a home on the 32500 block of Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu following reports of an animal attack, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a news release obtained by PEOPLE.

A child was found in the backyard of the property with a bite on her arm, per the news release. She was treated at the scene by Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel before being taken to the hospital by her parents for further care.

Having sustained injuries that "were not considered life-threatening," the girl is expected to make a full recovery, local news outlet KTLA reported.

Pod of 23 pilot whales found dead after mass stranding in Orkney, Scotland

A pod of 23 pilot whales have died after a mass stranding in Orkney.

The mammals were discovered on the island of Sanday on Sunday but it appears they may have been dead for several days.

A full investigation into the stranding will now take place.

Last summer 77 pilot whales washed ashore on the island.

About a dozen that were still alive were euthanised.

The carcasses were later buried at multiple land sites, which were approved after tests were carried out to prevent any possible disturbance to archaeological sites.

The pod included male whales up to seven metres (22ft) long as well as females, calves and juveniles.

Car hit by lightning multiple times in China on August 5, driver safe

mmmmmmm
On August 5, in Beihai City, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a vehicle was struck multiple times by lightning during an intense thunderstorm.

The driver stayed inside for about five minutes and remained unharmed.

Footage shows flashes illuminating the car's roof as the engine immediately stalled, this was due to the Faraday cage principle - the metal car body reroutes electricity around the cabin to the ground, protecting passengers.

While the car may suffer electrical damage, occupants inside are generally safe as long as they avoid touching the metal frame.

From NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

In a small village in Switzerland's beautiful Loetschental valley, Matthias Bellwald walks down the main street and is greeted every few steps by locals who smile or offer a handshake or friendly word.

Mr Bellwald is a mayor, but this isn't his village. Two months ago his home, three miles away in Blatten, was wiped off the map when part of the mountain and glacier collapsed into the valley.

The village's 300 residents had been evacuated days earlier, after geologists warned that the mountain was increasingly unstable. But they lost their homes, their church, their hotels and their farms.

Lukas Kalbermatten also lost the hotel that had been in his family for three generations."The feeling of the village, all the small alleys through the houses, the church, the memories you had when you played there as a child... all this is gone."

Though the disaster shocked Switzerland, some two thirds of the country is mountainous, and climate scientists warn that the glaciers and the permafrost - the glue that holds the mountains together - are thawing as the global temperature increases, making landslides more likely. Protecting areas will be costly.

BBC INDEPTH? Don't make me laugh.

A properly objective report would have also mentioned the downhill march of Swiss glaciers in the Little Ice Age.

My review of Brian Fagan's excellent book, The Little Ice Age, gives a flavour of just how dreadful those times were.

An hour may destroy what an age was building. ~ English Proverbs
A study from 2022 looks at this topic. Here's the abstract:
The Little Ice Age (LIA), which lasted from about 1250 to 1860 AD, was likely the coldest period of the last 8000 years. Using new documentary data and analyses of alpine glacier fluctuations, the complex transition from the Medieval Climate Anomaly to the LIA and the ensuing high variability of seasonal temperatures, are described and interpreted for Europe. The beginning of the LIA was likely different in both hemispheres. The low temperature average of the LIA is primarily due to the high number of cold winters. Conversely many summers were warm and dry.

Important triggers of the lower temperatures were, primarily, the numerous clusters of volcanic eruptions and the weak solar irradiance during the four prominent Grand Solar Minima: Wolf, Spörer, Maunder, and Dalton. The drop in temperature triggered the sea-ice-albedo feedback and led to a weakening of the Atlantic overturning circulation, possibly associated with a trend towards negative North Atlantic Oscillation indices.

The statistics of extreme events show a mixed picture. Correlations with forcing factors are weak, and can only be found in connection with the "Years without a Summer", which very often occurred after large volcanic eruptions.

Regions reach over 6 inches of rain

A dangerous flash flooding situation unfolded across portions of Wisconsin on Saturday and Sunday, including the Milwaukee area, that led to numerous reports of flooded roads and homes and forcing officials to close the Wisconsin State Fair.

The rounds of torrential rain and thunderstorms led to Milwaukee seeing its second-wettest day on record on Saturday after about 5.74 inches of rain fell during the evening hours.

By Sunday morning, rainfall totals increased to about 6.69 inches.

"This is some unprecedented flooding that we have seen across the Milwaukee area, radar estimating over 10 inches in a handful of communities and that's in a fairly short period of time," FOX 6 News Milwaukee Meteorologist Stephanie Barichello said during an interview with FOX Weather on Sunday morning.
