Irony: Reporter of fake news Brian Williams on crusade against "fake news"

Journalist Brian Williams has become the latest person to slam 'fake news,' claiming it influenced the US election. But there's some irony in his apparent defense of quality journalism, as he was let go from his NBC gig last year for... reporting fake news.

"Fake news played a role in this election and continues to find a wide audience," Williams said on MSNBC on Wednesday night.

He went on to mention retired Army Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn - President-elect Donald Trump's pick for national security adviser - for promoting links to fake news stories on his Twitter account.

Those "gems," as Williams called them, included claims that Hillary Clinton was involved in a child sex ring and that US President Barack Obama laundered money from Muslim terrorists.

But they say those in glass houses should not throw stones - and when it comes to spreading fake news, there is no denying that Williams has done the same.

Police have arrested a man in the Dutch city of Rotterdam suspected of planning a terrorist attack, local media reports. Law enforcement found a Kalashnikov assault rifle and an Islamic State flag while raiding the man's house.

According to various Dutch media outlets, the suspect in question was arrested back on Wednesday, when an anti-terrorist unit raided his house and found a Kalashnikov assault rifle with two full magazines.

An Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) flag was also found in the 30-year-old man's apartment.

A 10-year-old schoolgirl who suffered burns to 60 percent of her body told police two unidentified men in a Jharkhand village, eastern India, poured kerosene on her, set her on fire and threw in a dried well for resisting rape.

Police have registered attempted rape and murder charges against two men who are missing, and detained five suspects for questioning, the Hindustan Times reported.

The girl was playing outside her home in Seraikela-Kharsawan district's Kandra village on Wednesday morning when two men turned up and tried to lure her away with candy, she said.

When the girl refused, they picked her up by force and took her to a stone-crushing unit in the village, police said. There the pair stripped her and tried to rape her. The 10-year-old told police that when she resisted and tried to escape, the men caught her, poured kerosene on her back, set ablaze and threw her into an abandoned well. Then they fled.

Severely burnt, the girl shouted for help. Luckily, her cries were heard by a woman who was passing by. Locals pulled the girl out and informed her parents and police, the newspaper reported.

Flashback Graphic body cam video released of cops murdering 6-year-old autistic boy

After viewing officers gunning down a 6-year-old autistic boy in a police body cam video during court on Wednesday, a state judge released a heavily edited copy of the footage to the public. Although the officers claim that the boy's father had used his vehicle as a deadly weapon against them, the video clearly shows the father with his hands up and his SUV parked during the fatal shooting.

Around 9:30 p.m. on November 3, 2015, Marksville police began pursuing Christopher Few's SUV after he had driven off during an argument with his fiancée, who was in a separate vehicle. According to police, the officers decided to conduct a traffic stop because Few had an outstanding warrant. But the Clerk of Court, the District Attorney's Office, Marksville Police Department, and City Court did not have any warrants against him.

Prior to the shooting, Marksville Police Officer Norris Greenhouse Jr. reported that Few had rammed his SUV into the officer's patrol car. But State Police detective Rodney Owens testified that no physical evidence exists suggesting Few's vehicle had collided with Greenhouse's patrol car.

In the newly released body cam video recorded by Marksville Police Sergeant Kenneth Parnell III, three police cruisers briefly pursue Few's SUV for several seconds before he parks his vehicle and can be seen holding his empty hands in the air. On Wednesday, Sgt. Parnell told the court that even though he approached the driver's window with his gun drawn, he did not pull the trigger because the police sergeant did not fear for his life.

Comment: As of mid-November 2016 trials for Greenhouse and Stafford had been postponed.

The epidemic of heroin and opioid related deaths in the US continues to grow, surpassing gun homicides in 2015, a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report shows. Nearly 5,000 more people died from opioids in 2015 than in 2014.

Both heroin and opioid use have exploded in the US, after decades of doctors overprescribing painkillers in the 1990s and 2000s. A report from the CDC released Thursday found that the drug problem has become so deadly that heroin deaths outnumbered gun fatalities last year for the first time in US history.

Until 2007, gun deaths outnumbered heroin deaths five to one, according to the Washington Post. But 2015 saw 12,989 people die from heroin and 12,979 die from gun homicides.

A total of 98 clubs have been impacted by the sex abuse scandal in British football, with 83 individuals now identified as suspects, the National Council of Police Chiefs (NPCC) reported Friday morning.

In a statement, the NPCC said that the age range for potential victims at the time of the abuse spans seven years through to 20 years, and the figure covers all tiers of football, from Premier League clubs through to amateur teams.

A total 639 referrals have been received by a victim helpline established by British children's charity the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) and Operation Hydrant, the police investigation set up to investigate allegations of 'non-recent' sexual abuse.

Comment: This sex abuse scandal is really blowing up and revealing how sick our society is.

An 18-year-old Pennsylvania girl live-streamed her and her 19-year-old friend's death while using Facebook Live and driving. The girls were hit in the back by a tractor-trailer while driving slowly, possibly on a spare tire doughnut.

Brooke Miranda Hughes died Tuesday night while driving along Interstate-380 near Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, after a tractor-trailer crashed into the back of her car. The crash also killed her passenger, 19-year-old Chaniya Morrison-Toomey. Hughes had turned on Facebook Live and Morrison-Toomey asked, "are you going live?" the Scranton Times-Tribune reported.

Before Hughes could respond, the video captured lights flooding the car along with sounds of tires screeching, followed by blackness. The video plays for an additional seven minutes until a man's voice is heard along with a blurry, bearded face.

Can Ben Carson save the liberal millennials who disdain him?

As much as Democrats bemoan the decline of the middle-class, it's ironic that liberal cities tend to be the most unequal. In 2014, 23 of 25 of the most financially unequal metros were represented by Democrats, according to data compiled by The Atlantic.

A prime culprit of this inequality is a labor-union supported regulation — a regulation that the incoming Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Dr. Ben Carson can help do something about.

Draconian rules against apartment construction have made it nearly impossible in many large cities to keep up the population growth. All over the country, especially in coastal metros, existing residents have created laws against development.

US life expectancy declines for the first time since 1993: Report

Life and death
Life expectancy in the United States has declined for the first time in more than two decades, according to a new report, a development linked to a range of worsening health problems in the country.

US death rate increased 1.2 percent last year, the first time it has increased since 1993 and that led to a 0.1 percent drop in life expectancy, according to a report released Thursday by the National Center for Health Statistics.

American males born in 2015 could expect to live 76.3 years, down from 76.5 in 2014. Females could expect to live to 81.2 years, down from 81.3 the previous year, the report said.

The report shows that a decades-long trend of rising life expectancy in the US could be ending. In most of the years since World War II, life expectancy in the US has inched up, thanks to medical advances, public health campaigns and better nutrition and education.

'Go to Africa': German Far-right party sends flyers to city council over mosque construction

A German far-right party, Third Way ("Der III Weg"), has sent letters to the members of a city council in a German town, urging them to leave the country for Africa. Officials say the "humiliating" move is likely a protest against the planned construction of a mosque.

Events unfolded in the tiny western community of Hachenburg in the Federal state of Rhineland Palatinate, Focus newspaper reported. "All 22 council members received post cards to their private addresses," the chairman Peter Klockner confirmed, saying that the flyers urged local politicians to leave the country.

"If you don't love Germany, you should leave Germany," one of the statements in the letters read. Another one said: "Travel voucher to Africa for the advocates of alienation."
