There is a war coming shrouded in propaganda. It will involve us. Speak up.

John Pilger

In this new essay, John Pilger recalls the 'electric' opposition of writers and journalists to the coming war in the 1930s and investigates why today there is 'a silence filled by a consensus of propaganda' as the two greatest powers draw closer to conflict.
In 1935, the Congress of American Writers was held in New York City, followed by another two years later. They called on 'the hundreds of poets, novelists, dramatists, critics, short story writers and journalists' to discuss the 'rapid crumbling of capitalism' and the beckoning of another war. They were electric events which, according to one account, were attended by 3,500 members of the public with more than a thousand turned away.

Arthur Miller, Myra Page, Lillian Hellman, Dashiell Hammett warned that fascism was rising, often disguised, and the responsibility lay with writers and journalists to speak out. Telegrams of support from Thomas Mann, John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, C Day Lewis, Upton Sinclair and Albert Einstein were read out.

The journalist and novelist Martha Gellhorn spoke up for the homeless and unemployed, and 'all of us under the shadow of violent great power'.

Martha, who became a close friend, told me later over her customary glass of Famous Grouse and soda: 'The responsibility I felt as a journalist was immense. I had witnessed the injustices and suffering delivered by the Depression, and I knew, we all knew, what was coming if silences were not broken.'

Comment: John Pilger has focused on China, but is the war with normal human beings no matter where they live?

Flashback In 1969, Dr Richard Day made some astonishing predictions about where the world would be today

Dr Richard L Day
© New York Times Obituary, June 16, 1989Dr. Richard Day taught at Mount Sinai from 1968 until he retired in 1971.
Dr. Richard Day taught at Mount Sinai from 1968 until he retired in 1971. Earlier he had been national medical director of Planned Parenthood (1965-1968); professor and chairman of the department of pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh (1956 to 1965); professor and chairman of the department of pediatrics in the Downstate Medical School in Brooklyn (1953 to 1956) and associate professor at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University (1935 to 1953) | New York Times Obituary, June 16, 1989

On March 20th, 1969, the late Dr Lawrence Dunegan (1923-2004) attended an astonishing lecture at a meeting of the Pittsburgh Pediatric Society. The lecturer was Dr Richard Day (1905-1989), who at the time was Professor of Pediatrics at Mount Sinai Medical School in New York. Day had previously served as Medical Director of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Dr Dunegan had been a student of Dr Day at the University of Pittsburgh, and was thus well acquainted with him. He later claimed that Dr Day had asked the attendees not to take notes or record what he was about to tell them during that lecture. Something which Dr Dunegan said he found unusual for a professor to ask of his audience. The reason, Dr Day implied, was that there would be negative repercussions - possibly personal danger - against him if it became widely known that he had talked about the information he was about to relay to the group.

Dr Day apparently also told the group that what he was about to say "would make it easier for them to adapt if they knew what to expect beforehand," something of an ambiguous statement which became clearer as Dr Day spoke.

Republican Gov. Mike DeWine of Ohio received thousands of dollars in donations from donors who provided transgender medical services or opposed efforts to ban the procedures for minors.

DeWine vetoed House Bill 68 on Friday, which would have prohibited doctors from prescribing puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for minors and banned boys from competing in girls' sports, just hours before the deadline. A review of donations from 2018 to 2023 found that the governor received $40,300 from the Ohio Children's Hospital Association (OCHA), Cincinnati Children's, Nationwide Children's Hospital and ProMedica Children's Hospital, all of whom support transgender medical care.

OCHA donated $10,000 to the Mike DeWine and Jon Husted Transition Fund on Dec. 28, 2018, and another $10,000 on Dec. 7, 2022, according to the report. A transition fund allows candidates to spend donations for "transition activities and inaugural celebrations," according to Ohio's campaign finance handbook.

Tucker Carlson: Illegal immigrants brought here and told whites are the bad guys

TCarlson

Tucker Carlson and Stephen Miller discuss the impact of workplace diversity quotas and immigration policies on racial narratives in America.

Tucker Carlson, a prominent media figure, addressed American citizens on Thursday, highlighting his perspective on the narrative propagated by political and media establishments. According to Carlson, these groups suggest that white citizens are the primary cause of problems faced by minorities in the U.S.

Carlson's discussion focused on workplace diversity quotas. He expressed concerns that such policies foster racism among immigrants and create a hostile work environment, likening it to a "corporate Jim Crow structure." He argued that these practices are not only immoral but also detrimental to all employees, regardless of their background.

Meanwhile, Carlson pointed out that while the ruling class blames white Americans for societal issues, there is also an influx of illegal immigrants into the country. This aspect, he believes, further complicates the racial dynamics in America.

Joining the conversation, Stephen Miller from America First Legal shared his views on the intentional promotion of racial division. Miller and Carlson discussed how globalists, who they claim are controlling the American government, are contributing to this division. Alex Jones, another media figure, shared his thoughts on the interview via a written piece.

Over 100 journalists killed in less than three months

Author
© Paul Searle/ScreenshotAuthor Nathaniel St Clair holds vigil for slain journalists 12/25/2023
This is a transcript of the speech I gave on December 22nd at a vigil for the overwhelming number of journalists who have been killed in Gaza since October 7th. It was held in front of The Oregonian headquarters, a publication that, like many mainstream media outlets, has chosen to remain silent amid the unprecedented targeting of their colleagues. At the time of the speech, 96 journalists had been confirmed dead, and tragically, that number has now surpassed 100. Each loss represents a grievous violation of international law.
My name is Nathaniel St. Clair, and I've worked for CounterPunch, an independent media publication, for over a decade. And though I hesitate to call myself a journalist, I have had the privilege of editing and publishing the work of hundreds, from all over the U.S. and the world. So I'm very familiar with the kind of people who commit themselves to this indispensable profession. And wow, the gravity of their work feels more powerful than ever. It certainly seems more dangerous.

Nearly 100 journalists have been killed in less than three months in Palestine. And that's not by accident. They aren't collateral damage. They weren't human shields. Most were targeted deliberately.
Their offense: exposing the deceit behind the propaganda flushed out by the Israeli government, and our own government, our president, and the mainstream media, many of whom don't function as journalists.
Instead, they act like stenographers for the state, for the military-industrial complex. Which is profiting massively off of this slaughter, banking on people being uninformed and indifferent to it.

Well, real journalists are preventing that, because the real journalists are standing in defiance of power, standing in the face of the war machine, and are bravely documenting its crimes. Documenting the daily horror raining down on millions of civilians trapped on a small slice of land.

Eurostar in CHAOS: Hundreds stranded as trains from St Pancras are cancelled over Thames Tunnel flooding

New Year travel plans for thousands of Brits - including trips to Disneyland Paris - have been thrown into disarray after Eurostar and Southeastern trains were cancelled amid flooding in tunnels beneath the River Thames.

Eurostar has cancelled a total of 29 services between London and Europe after tunnels at Ebbsfleet International in Kent filled with water - scuppering high speed services days after wildcat strikes did the same at Christmas.

National Rail says disruption will continue until at least the end of the day - but irate customers claim they were not informed of the risk of disruption before arriving at stations. One tweeted Eurostar to say: 'Thank you for ruining Christmas holiday!'

Travel journalist Simon Calder said he had spoken to families 'in tears because their trip to Disney has been cancelled' days before New Year, with others desperately seeking out flights and ferries in order to get their plans back on track.

Starting Jan. 1 'undocumented immigrants' will qualify for free (i.e. taxpayer-funded) health care in California

Cash-strapped California will ring in the new year by offering free health care to all undocumented immigrants who qualify for the state's government-run health insurance program.

The state, which faces a $68 billion deficit in the next fiscal year, has been steadily expanding access to its Medi-Cal health insurance program for low-income residents, allowing undocumented children to qualify for the taxpayer-funded program in 2015, then expanding it under Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom to cover undocumented adults between the ages of 19-25 and those over 50.

On Jan. 1, California will become the first state to offer free health care to all qualifying individuals — regardless of immigration status or age.

In May, Democrats in the California Legislature celebrated the budget deal struck by Newsom and state lawmakers that led to the latest Medi-Cal expansion, which will see some 700,000 undocumented immigrants, ages 26-49, obtain full coverage under the program.

Ukraine hustles its donors

Empty Piggy Bank
© Washington Times.com
Dear Readers:

It's like any charity. Once you donate, then you are on their mailing list, and their "Development" office will continue to ply you, to milk you like a cow. So too, with the Ukraine. Once Western nations took it upon themselves to fund the entire Ukrainian government — civil service salaries, army, pensions, the whole 9 yards, well, now they are stuck with this white elephant.

Empty Piggy Bank
© Awful Avalanche
Today I have this piece by reporter Ilya Abramov. The Ukrainian government is busy drawing up its budget for 2024. They need a lot of money to keep things going but, alas, the piggy bank is empty!

I certainly do not envy Prime Minister Denys Shmygal, who is supposed to be in charge of the Ukrainian govenment. It's tough to operate a government, when you have no money. Hence, Shmygal decided to summon a "Donors Conference", wherein he can get all the sponsors together in the same room, and have them make pledges. He figures this is the quickest way to get his hands on the cash.

The reporter sought out the expert opinion of political pundit Vladimir Skachko, who affirms that Ukraine needs the dough right now, it can't wait. That last American emergency packet of $250 million is almost gone already.

I don't remember whether I mentioned already, that Skachko's name comes from the Russian/Ukrainian root skak - meaning "to jump". [From an ancient Indo-European root *skek- with cognates such as English "shake" and German "schicken".] But, despite his unfortunate name, this man does not jump to the Ukrainian tune, that's for sure.
