Children and family are key priorities for Russia - Putin

family running through field
Children and family values are of the utmost importance for both society and the government, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said. The remarks were made in an official statement on International Children's Day on June 1.

Putin praised the holiday and the idea behind it, noting that many families from across the country and other nations, including Belarus and China, have flocked to Moscow to take part in the festivities organized to celebrate the day.

"I would like to emphasize that in our country, the issues of raising children and strengthening family values are given priority attention by both the state and society. It is important that every child is surrounded by care and love, grows up healthy and happy, and develops their talents and abilities," Putin said. He praised the work of the Russian Children's Fund, a charitable organization that deals with a variety of issues concerning raising children and protecting the rights of minors.

In the run-up to the holiday, the president held a video conference with Russian families from various regions who were awarded the Order of Parental Glory. He praised the families present, all with three or more children, as "the pride of our country." According to Putin, there are now more than 2 million large families with multiple children in Russia, and the number has jumped by more than a quarter in the past few years.

Paulette Harlow, an elderly woman with a debilitating medical condition, was sentenced to 24 months in jail Friday, May 31, 2024.
Her husband pleaded for leniency but those pleas were ignored by the court.

A 75-year-old pro-life activist was sentenced to two years in prison by the US District Court for violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act. Paulette Harlow from Kingston, Massachusetts was one of ten individuals who were convicted as part of a "conspiracy" to block women from entering an abortion clinic in Washington, DC.

Harlow has been on house arrest since her conviction due to her ill health. Her husband pleaded for leniency but those pleas were ignored by the court. John Harlow said "I feel like Paulette is dying. In my heart, I think she's having a hard time staying alive." He is her caretaker and said that he would take care of her in prison if he could, LiveAction reported.

"We've tried to be good people," he said. "I love my wife dearly. She's made me go beyond what I'd otherwise have done" to help others. "We're throwing ourselves on the mercy of the court," he said.

Target, which received backlash for pride-themed merchandise last year, is reportedly planning to offer pride merchandise in a limited number of stores and online.

As Pride Month begins this year, many companies will reportedly be scaling back their LGBTQ+ advocacy campaigns following significant backlash and boycotts last year.

Last year, brands like Target and Bud Light experienced notable market declines and loss of value after their pride-themed promotions became targets of nationwide boycotts.

Industry analysts suggest that companies will adopt a more subdued approach to Pride merchandise this year, per USA Today. Pink Media President Matt Skallerud acknowledged the challenges faced by the media, marketing, and advertising sectors, telling the outlet, "Nobody in the media, marketing and advertising world wants to admit how heavy and hard this has been."

Comment: Tim Poole weighed in at the time of the Target debacle:

Britain's oldest medical journal goes full woke

Lancet
© opindia.com
The Lancet, Britain's oldest medical journal and the second most important one globally, has been edited by Richard Horton for the past 29 years. During that time, the 62-year-old has become embroiled in numerous controversies - several of which involved him using the journal to promote political viewpoints that aligned with his own.

In a particularly egregious example last year, Horton penned an editorial denouncing then-Home Secretary Suella Braverman for saying that migrants crossing the Channel "possess values which are at odds with our country". Exactly what business a medical journal had criticising the Home Secretary's views on immigration was not explained. In fact, Horton went so far as to praise Italian communist Antonio Gramsci, and wrote that "we" must not be afraid to engage in a "war of position" against "populists". It was embarrassing stuff.

Now The Lancet appears to have gone one better, with its latest author guidelines throwing science completely out the window. Under the heading "Reporting sex-based and gender-based analyses", the guidelines state:
In human research, the term "sex" carries multiple definitions. It often refers to an umbrella term for a set of biological attributes associated with physical and physiological features (eg, chromosomal genotype, hormonal levels, internal and external anatomy). It can also signify a sex categorisation, most often designated at birth ("sex assigned at birth") based on a newborn's visible external anatomy. The term "gender" generally refers to socially constructed roles, behaviours, and identities of women, men, and gender-diverse people that occur in a historical and cultural context, and might vary across societies and over time.
So a supposedly serious medical journal is peddling the rather dubious distinction between "sex" on the one hand and "gender" on the other.

Strike shuts down major Canadian meat processing plant amidst shortage slaughter-weight cattle

Cargill Inc. is shifting beef production to other facilities after halting operations at a Canadian plant due to a weeklong strike at the facility.

Beef processing at Cargill's Dunlop plant in Guelph, Ontario was halted after about 1,000 workers took to the picket lines on May 27. The plant has capacity to process 1,500 head of cattle per day. The workers rejected a proposal that the US meatpacker said would have raised wages by 9.3% in the first year of a four-year agreement.

"While we navigate this labor disruption, we will shift production to other facilities within our broad supply chain footprint to minimize any disruptions to our customers," a Cargill spokesperson said.

Comment: The food supply is taking a battering from all angles, whether it be Western governments' brazen war on farming, suspicious food plant fires, soaring feed and energy costs, or (seemingly manufactured) viral outbreaks:

Two ex-FBI officials who traded anti-Trump texts close to settlement over alleged privacy violations

Two former FBI officials have reached a tentative settlement with the Justice Department to resolve claims that their privacy was violated when the department leaked to the news media text messages that they had sent one another that disparaged former President Donald Trump.

The tentative deal was disclosed in a brief court filing Tuesday that did not reveal any of the terms.

Peter Strzok, a former top FBI counterintelligence agent who helped lead the bureau's investigation into potential ties between Russia and Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, was fired in 2018 after the anti-Trump text messages came to light.

Lisa Page, a former FBI lawyer, voluntarily resigned that same year.

They alleged in federal lawsuits filed in the District of Columbia that the Justice Department infringed on their privacy rights when officials, in December 2017, shared copies of their communication with reporters — including messages that described Trump as an "idiot" and a "loathsome human" and that called the prospect of a Trump victory "terrifying."

The fighter jets were on a training flight from Misawa Air Base and landed safely at nearby Aomori airport after one developed an unspecified mechanical problem and requested an emergency landing, airport officials said.

Japan's Air Self Defense Force declined to provide details, including the cause of the emergency landing.
