Putin to Duma: The strength of Russia is in the unity of its people

Speaking before the newly elected Lower House of parliament, President Vladimir Putin emphasized the importance of having a strong national defense and rich mineral resources, but also said that the main strength of Russia was in the unity of its people.

The President also quoted the Prime Minister of the Russian Empire, the famous reformer Pyotr Stolypin, who over a century ago said that "we all must unite and coordinate our efforts in order to maintain Russia's supreme historical right - to be strong."

Putin noted that this was the right of any nation, but warned the lawmakers against taking his statement in an imperialist way, saying "We have never imposed anything on anyone and we have no plans to do so. Russia's strength is within ourselves; it is inside our people, in our traditions and our culture, in our economy and vast territories with natural riches. Of course our strength is in our defense ability. But the most important thing is that our strength lies in the unity of our people."

He reminded the State Duma that national strength was a key condition for maintaining sovereignty and independence.

Comment: Russia must be very strong, since Putin has unified Russia greater than any Western leader can currently claim to have unified their country

Hillary Clinton has responded to reports that she called for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to be attacked by a drone in 2010.

Speaking at a press conference in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Clinton responded to a reporter's question as to whether she had ever joked about taking Assange out with a drone.

"I don't know anything about what he's talking about," she said. "I don't recall any joke."

"It would have been a joke, if it had been said, but I don't recall that," she added.

Comment: Yeah, because it's totally normal for people to joke about bombing someone with a drone. Nice try Killary.

True Pundit broke the news of Clinton's alleged statement on Sunday, reporting the then-secretary of state asked, "Can't we just drone this guy?" in a State Department meeting to discuss the whistleblowing site and its planned CableGate leaks in November 2010.

Comment: Killary Clinton wanted drone attack on Julian Assange

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's retreat from Russia's initiative to mediate direct talks between him and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in an effort to promote peace in the Middle East is currently the only obstacle on the path to progress on the issue, a deputy speaker of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, said on Tuesday.

"Abbas has accepted the Russian offer and informed the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov on his agreement, but Netanyahu has retreated after he admitted it last month," Ahmad Tibi said during a meeting with Konstantin Kosachev, the head of Foreign Affairs Committee in the Federation Council, the upper house of the Russian parliament, in Moscow.

Independent military experts say September attack on UN aid convoy in Syria 'a well-prepared hoax'

The September 19 attack on a UN humanitarian convoy in Aleppo was "a well-prepared hoax", according to a group of independent military experts attached to the International Syria Support Group (ISSG).

On September 19, a UN-Syrian Arab Red Crescent convoy carrying humanitarian aid for the Aleppo province was hit by a strike, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). As a result, 18 of 31 trucks were destroyed and at least 21 individuals were killed. According to the report seen by RIA Novosti, the experts studied the video recording made by the Russian drones accompanying the convoy, where "a car with a trailer clearly carrying a large-caliber mortar" can be seen. They also noted that al-Nusra Front-controlled militants were active in the region, when the convoy was attacked.

"Urm al-Kubra is located in the region controlled by al-Nusra [Front] militants, moreover, this territory is noted as a region with high concentration of militants. If you consider reports of September 19, you will see that al-Nusra militants carried out a large-scale offensive supported by mass artillery fire, tanks and volley fire rocket systems in that very region at that time," the report read.

Bernie Sanders introduces legislation to close "Trump loophole", eliminating tax breaks for wealthy 1%

It's hard to tell what surprised voters more: that Donald Trump may have gone nearly two decades without paying federal income taxes or that it may have been legal. But Senator Bernie Sanders hopes to put an end to that by introducing new legislation.

Sanders may no longer be running for president, but that won't stop him from trying to crack down on tax breaks for the wealthy. On Tuesday, the independent Vermont senator announced plans to introduce legislation that targets "special tax breaks and loopholes in a corrupt tax code" in the next Congress, he said in a statement.

These breaks allow "billionaires and powerful corporations to avoid paying their fair share of taxes while sticking the burden on the middle class," he said.

"It's time to create a tax system which is fair and which asks the wealthy and powerful to start paying their fair share of taxes," Sanders said.

"We are definitely not going to interfere in Syria's internal affairs. Russia will leave Syria after restoration of the law and stability there," the lawmaker said at the meeting.

A free trade agreement between the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) and Vietnam takes effect on Wednesday with its ratification. The deal opens the EEU's market of 181 million people to Vietnam.

The EEU countries - Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan - get the opportunity to sell goods in Vietnam on a preferential basis.

The free trade deal covers more than 90 percent of all goods traded between the EEU and Vietnam. It will save exporters from the EEU about $40-60 million in the first year. Vietnamese companies can expect savings of up to $5-$10 million a year.

With the deal Hanoi expects to significantly increase its foreign trade. Trade with Russia is expected to more than double to $10 billion by 2020.

US blocks Russia's statement at UN Security Council on embassy shelling in Syria

The United States blocked at the United Nations Security Council Russia's statement on the shelling of its embassy in Damascus, Syria that took place on Monday, the representative of Russia's Permanent Mission to the United Nations told RIA Novosti.

"[The statement] was actually blocked by the US delegation, which tried to add extraneous elements in a standard in such cases text," the permanent mission statement said. "The British and Ukrainians clumsily played up to the Americans. It demonstrates their blatant disrespect for the Vienna Convention of Diplomatic Relations," the statement added.

Comment: How embarrassing for the US to behave like kids in front of world leaders.

Update: Putin suspends Russia-US deal on disposal of plutonium from decommissioned nuclear warheads

Russia has suspended a post-Cold War deal with the US on disposal of plutonium from decommissioned nuclear warheads. The decision was explained by "the hostile actions of the US" against Russia and Washington's failure to observe the terms of the deal. A decree signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin cites "the radical change in the environment, a threat to strategic stability posed by the hostile actions of the US against Russia, and the inability of the US to deliver on the obligation to dispose of excessive weapons plutonium under international treaties, as well as the need to take swift action to defend Russian security" as justification for suspending the deal.

The development was not entirely surprising, since Russia earlier expressed its dissatisfaction with how the US wants to handle plutonium disposal. Washington decided it would be cheaper to mix nuclear materials with special additives. Russia insisted that the US was violating the terms of the deal, which required it to use a nuclear reactor to transmute plutonium. Unlike the mixing technology, the latter method makes the process irreversible.

Comment: Its not enough that highly radioactive 1,000 gallons of nuclear waste leak in Washington every year, but in 2014 Canada proposed storing nuclear waste right next to Lake Huron, which also happens to connect to all the other great lakes, which also happens to make up the greatest collection of fresh water on Earth.

See also: Update: The US has responded to Putin's suspension of the deal by calling it a 'big mistake,' and RFE/RL has created a video to explain the agreement and Putin's suspension of it. However, what is not mentioned in that slick piece of propaganda is how the US reneged on its part of the deal to permanently disarm its nuclear weapons stockpile by choosing a method of plutonium processing that is reversible. Which completely undermines the spirit and purpose of the agreement. The US is bashing Putin for suspending the deal, but it's the US that refused to hold up its end of the bargain and voided it in the first place. The only thing Putin has done is drop the formality.

Amidst unbridled anti-Russian propaganda, situation around Russian diplomats in US gets increasingly worse

Russian diplomats and members of their families are subject to threats from American security services, the Russian Foreign Ministry quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov as saying in response to US Department of State's allegations about harassment against US diplomats working in Russia.

Against the background of "repeatedly replicated unsubstantiated complaints from the Department of State, the situation around Russian diplomats in the US is indeed getting more and more complicated," Ryabkov said.

"In the past two-and-a-half years, attempts to recruit our personnel have become visibly more frequent, and American security services descend to most unpleasant methods of pressure, up to threats to the heath of family members," he said.

"The normal functioning of our diplomatic missions is prevented through artificial difficulties to official contacts, other far-fetched restrictions," he added.
