Best of the Web: "You Cannot Criticize Israel In This Country And Survive" - Helen Thomas Defends Comments on Israelis in Radio Interview

Thomas Says Remarks on Israelis 'Distorted,' Calls Charge of Anti-Semitism 'Baloney'

Veteran White House journalist Helen Thomas, who resigned in June over comments many viewed as anti-Semitic, has taken to the airwaves to defend the remarks, saying they were "exactly what I thought."

"I hit the third rail," Thomas told Ohio radio station WMRN-AM in an interview that aired today. "You cannot criticize Israel in this country and survive."

Thomas, 90, caused an uproar May 27 when she said Israelis should "get the hell out of Palestine" and "go home" to Poland, Germany, America and "everywhere else."

On September 25, 2010, Jesse Ventura discussed his book, American Conspiracies: Lies, Lies, and More Dirty Lies that the Government Tells Us.

During the session before an SRO audience, he charged that the Huffington Post, aka HuffPost, a news web site, "censored my 9/11 article!"

Mr. Ventura was speaking at Baltimore's BookFest. He was joined on the program by Richard Sher, an ex-news reader for WJZ-TV in Baltimore, MD.

Harold Lewis is Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Here is his letter of resignation to Curtis G. Callan Jr, Princeton University, President of the American Physical Society.

Anthony Watts describes it thus:
This is an important moment in science history. I would describe it as a letter on the scale of Martin Luther, nailing his 95 theses to the Wittenburg church door. It is worthy of repeating this letter in entirety on every blog that discusses science.
It's so utterly damning that I'm going to run it in full without further comment. (H/T GWPF, Richard Brearley).

Best of the Web: John Lennon's 70th birthday celebrated in New York's Central Park

A crush of fans circled a flower-graced mosaic in Central Park's Strawberry Fields and sang lyrics from "Imagine" on Saturday to honor Beatles legend John Lennon on his 70th birthday.

On the day when the Liverpool Lad would have become a septuagenarian, thousands of fans from around the world gathered to remember the floppy-haired British superstar who just wanted to give peace a chance.

"His music speaks to people of any nation, any age, and that's why I think so many young people now who never would have known him still find him so appealing," said Karen Kriendler Nelson, 69, who lives nearby and often visits the mosaic that spells out Lennon's song "Imagine."

She and her Maltese dog, Pino, joined a group of fans who sang the lines, "Imagine there's no countries/ It isn't hard to do/ Nothing to kill or die for/ And no religion too/ Imagine all the people/ Living life in peace ..."

Joan Acarin and his wife, Laia, visited the memorial from Spain.

"The values Lennon defended are still alive," said Joan Acarin, a 41-year-old attorney from Barcelona. "It's the idea that we do not have to fight wars."

Cenk Uygur of the online news show The Young Turks interviewed former Governor of Minnesota Jesse Ventura earlier this year. Their discussion about the hidden history of the US is one you will never hear on mainstream media. Watch it and find out why...

Oliver Stone's film JFK, which dramatized New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison's criminal prosecution of Clay Shaw for his involvement in the assassination of JFK, drew it's historical context for the conspiracy from Colonel L. Fletcher Prouty, a USAF liaison officer to the CIA. His fantastic first-hand account of the hidden history of the US from the end of WWII is told in JFK: The CIA, Vietnam and the Plot to Assassinate John F. Kennedy, which you can buy here.

SOTT.net thinks that Cenk Uygur hit the nail on the head when he refers to a system of control in which unseen forces throughout history have "self-selected" those without conscience into positions of power.

Best of the Web: Al-Qaeda or Al-Tricko? 'US cries wolf to rev up world for dominance war'

European intelligence officials and senior Pakistan diplomats have accused the U.S. of crying wolf after it issued a terror alert for Europe earlier this week. The UK's Guardian newspaper goes on to allege the actual purpose of the alert was to justify a recent increase in drone attacks inside Pakistan. American-German historian F. William Engdahl, says the timing of the terror alerts has led to a questioniong of U.S. motives.

Best of the Web: War Inc: NATO Contractors Attacking Supply Convoys in Afghanistan

NATO supply convoys travelling through Pakistan to Afghanistan have regularly come under attack in the past, but following Pakistan's decision to block their route through the Khyber Pass, they now face an even bigger security threat.

Hundreds of tankers and trucks have been left stranded on highways and depots across Pakistan, with little or no security.

Taliban militants have regularly been targeting the convoys, even when they are heavily protected.

But many believe it is not just the militants who pose a security threat to the convoys.

The owners of oil tankers being used to supply fuel to Nato in Afghanistan say some of the attacks on their convoys are suspicious.

Best of the Web: America's Third World Economy

For a number of years I reported on the monthly nonfarm payroll jobs data. The data did not support the praises economists were singing to the "New Economy." The "New Economy" consisted, allegedly, of financial services, innovation, and high-tech services.

This economy was taking the place of the old "dirty fingernail" economy of industry and manufacturing. Education would retrain the workforce, and we would move on to a higher level of prosperity.

Time after time I reported that there was no sign of the "New Economy" jobs, but that the old economy jobs were disappearing. The only net new jobs were in lowly paid domestic services such as waitresses and bartenders, retail clerks, health care and social assistance (mainly ambulatory health care services), and, before the bubble burst, construction.

The facts, issued monthly by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, had no impact on the "New Economy" propaganda. Economists continued to wax eloquently about how globalism was a boon for our future.

Pakistani diplomat launches scathing attack on White House

European intelligence claims raised terror alerts 'nonsensical'

A US terror alert issued this week about al-Qaida plots to attack targets in western Europe was politically motivated and not based on credible new information, senior Pakistani diplomats and European intelligence officials have told the Guardian.

The non-specific US warning, which despite its vagueness led Britain, France and other countries to raise their overseas terror alert levels, was an attempt to justify a recent escalation in US drone and helicopter attacks inside Pakistan that have "set the country on fire", said Wajid Shamsul Hasan, the high commissioner to Britain.

Hasan, a veteran diplomat who is close to Pakistan's president, suggested the Obama administration was playing politics with the terror threat before next month's mid-term congressional elections, in which the Republicans are expected to make big gains.

He also claimed President Obama was reacting to pressure to demonstrate that his Afghan war strategy and this year's troop surge, which are unpopular with the American public, were necessary.

Best of the Web: People Power! 250,000 Americans protest against Obama's policies

An estimated quarter of a million people have staged a rally at The Lincoln Memorial in Washington against US President Barack Obama's policies.

Some 250,000 protesters from all over the US attended the rally, themed 'Jobs, Justice and Education,' to mobilize those who support the Democrats to turn out and vote in the mid-term elections and demonstrate against the billions of dollars being spent on war instead of jobs.

With over 400 groups participating in the march and rally, it was a diverse crowd of democratic-leaning organizations demanding that the government improve public education, do more to protect civil and human rights, and end the spending on war.

"We have a large contingent ... here as part of an anti-war march to say, 'lets take the money out of war and put it in investing in America'," CODEPINK member Medea Benjamin told a Press TV correspondent in Washington.

The largest numbers, however, were from unions demanding Congress produce jobs for the high number of jobless Americans.
