A man was killed by lightning on Wednesday night, according to the Waukesha police.

Police said the man, who was in his 40s, was believed to have been struck when he was walking through a parking lot during last night's storms.

It happened at about 7:40 p.m. outside a business in the 2000 block of Golf Road.

Police said a caller reported a man down on the ground during heavy rain with thunder and lightning.

First responders who arrived began life-saving efforts, and the man was then taken to a hospital, where he eventually died.

"This is a tragic and rare event. Our thoughts are with the individual's family and loved ones during this difficult time," Waukesha police said in the release.

Police said they don't believe the man was from Wisconsin.

Only three people have died from lightning strikes in Wisconsin in the past 10 years, according to the National Lightning Safety Council. The last death was in September 2025.
