2025 was the 43rd consecutive year in which ANIMALS 24-7 logged fatal and disfiguring dog attacks by breed or breed type, beginning in 1982.
All of the fatal dog attacks in the U.S. and Canada during 2025 and known to ANIMALS 24-7 are enumerated below by breed or breed type. There are 87 total enumerations because some fatal dog attacks involving multiple dogs are enumerated under each dog type involved.
Details & differences
The U.S. and Canadian totals are logged together because the U.S. and Canada form an ecological and cultural continuum, but ANIMALS 24-7 also keeps a separate log of Canadian cases, accessible here: Fatal & disfiguring dog attacks in Canada, 2004-present.
The final 2025 total of 84 known fatalities includes two in Canada.
The final U.S. total of 82 may be reduced by two if two cases are subtracted in which coroners decided that potentially fatal injuries were inflicted by pit bulls on owners who had already died, of which heart attack while intervening in a pit bull attack, or while personally under attack, is almost always the only other convincing explanation for the death.
Over the past 43 years, ANIMALS 24-7 has observed that such cases almost exclusively involve pit bulls. No other dog type appears to exhibit a similar compulsion to maul and dismember an alleged corpse.
Several other sources list only fatal dog attacks in which the fatal injuries are inflicted by the dog's jaws. ANIMALS 24-7 counts all deaths in which a dog's behavior is either the direct or proximate cause of death, whether the victim is dismembered by a dog, or suffers a fatal heart attack or fall due to a dog. Where proximate causes are involved, they are described in the notes accompanying each listing.

3) Lucrecia Macias Barajas, 46, 5-12-2025, Los Angeles, California. Found dead in tent with Fredy Pojoy Sajqui, 39, and live pit bull & live German shepherd mix. Sajqui died from an accidental overdose of fentanyl and methamphetamine. Barajas was also mauled by the dogs, officially posthumously.
