A week ahead of the official start of summer, several inches of snow fell over Big Sky Resort on Tuesday. It was a sprinkling compared to the several feet that fell on this day 16 years ago.

"When I got here there was about six inches of snow on the ground and it was a bit colder," Lyndsey Owens, marketing director at Big Sky Resort, said.

It is not the first time Owens has seen June snow.

"We got 32 inches on June 13, 2001. The resort opened. They opened a gondola and two runs off of that. I was actually here and I went skiing that day," Owens said.

She remembers the slopes were full and lift tickets were $15. That will not be happening this time. Owens says the snow on the ground is not dense enough to open any runs.

The weather did not put a damper on vacation plans. Many visitors continued with plans to ride the zip lines. It also gave the little ones a chance for springtime snowball fights.

However, it did throw some people off guard like Shaheer Burney who was at Big Sky for a conference.

"Coming from a place like Kentucky, we definitely do not expect this. It's probably 90 degrees in the state of Kentucky right now so it's a little odd," said Burney.

For Owens, snow is a nice surprise all year round.

"I like to say there's no such thing as inclement weather only inadequate clothing," Owens said.

She welcomes crowds to head for the snow while it is still there.
