In my opinion this outrageous response is the very epitome of a government department which is out of control. Refusing to provide information to the new administration about what staff do with their work time, to me suggests the US Department of Energy believes they are a law unto themselves - they think they are above politicians and political cycles, and intend to continue wasting money on climate programmes, regardless of what the new Trump administration wants.
I say defund the lot of them. The few important roles they perform, such as overseeing the handling of nuclear material and nuclear waste, can be transferred to other departments.

"You're fired!"
Nothing works without power. This what do you do during your working hours in the energy field is cause for friction. The issue has come up in the past. Usually these are low paid jobs with a lot of responsibility and they do require a lot of knowledge both on an administrative and on an engineering
level. The reason the department of energy responded in such a way is probably because they were offended. I'll give the answer to Mr. Trump's team : "We are busting our asses day-in , day-out in order to keep the U.S. alive."
You must be thinking about those departments which actually generate and transport energy when you say they are keeping the US alive and I agree.
