Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR) is considered one of the most vulnerable incumbents in the country, in part due to his support of the Affordable Care Act and also because he's a Democrat in the Deep South.
He released the 30-second TV ad Wednesday to help shore up support among his Christian constituents in the Bible Belt, telling voters that his faith guides him.
"I'm not ashamed to say that I believe in God, and I believe in His word," Pryor says in the ad, looking directly at the camera. "The Bible teaches us no one has all the answers, only God does, and neither political party is always right."
Republican Rep. Tom Cotton is leaving his seat in the 4th congressional district to challenge Pryor, who's pointed out to older voters that his opponent wanted to turn Medicare into a voucher system and raise the eligibility age to 70.
Cotton released an ad last week touting his military service, and he's releasing a TV spot to air only in the Jonesboro market that shows his mother sitting in front of a Christmas tree and stockings.
But Pryor's new ad also highlights his willingness to buck the Democratic Party line, such as when he joined only three other members of his party to vote against the so-called nuclear option in the Senate, and it suggests he was inspired by the Bible.
"This is my compass, my North Star," Pryor said. "It gives me comfort and guidance to do what's best for Arkansas."
