Arrest of a controversial spiritual guru on suspicion of raping a teenage girl has sparked days of mass protest rallies across India.

The demonstrations erupted in northwestern state of Rajasthan and some other regions after police detained Asaram Bapu, 72, at a retreat on Sunday.

Angry demonstrators have called for tough action against him, while Bapu's supporters say there is a conspiracy to tarnish his image.

His detention came after a 16-year-old girl accused the Hindu religious preacher of raping and assaulting her for an hour-and-a-half inside a locked cottage in the state of Rajasthan.

Bapu, who has thousands of followers worldwide and is well-known for his discourses on Hindu religion, has denied the charge.

The case is the latest in a series of high-profile rape cases in India that have fuelled public rage and protests.

The guru also sparked a controversy earlier this year for saying the famous victim of the fatal New Delhi gang rape would have been set free had she called her attackers brothers and pleaded for mercy.

The controversial remark came after a 23-year-old medical student was beaten and raped on a moving bus back in December last year. The victim later died of internal injuries. The horrific nature of the crime shocked Indians and sparked mass protests across the South Asian country.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, one woman is raped every 20 minutes in the world's second-most-populous country.
