"We have about 50% of the world's wealth but only 6.3% of its population. This disparity is particularly great as between ourselves and the peoples of Asia. In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. To do so, we will have to dispense with all sentimentality and day-dreaming; and our attention will have to be concentrated everywhere on our immediate national objectives. We need not deceive ourselves that we can afford today the luxury of altruism and world-benefaction."

Referring to the paragraph "That might sound fanciful, but researchers have already demonstrated that the pattern of energy consumed by a decent flat-screen TV can be used to work out what programme is being watched, and Hustinx is probably right that this isn't information most of us would wish to share with our electricity providers."
Being able to determine the program that you are watching seems a bit farfetched and wishful thinking. Sure you would be able to tell when the appliance is turned on and might even be able to predict which appliance it was, but to be able to read the varying power consumption to a switching power supply to indicate the program??? Maybe with an office of equipment to disect the power consumption pattern but a smart meter on a house, give me a break. What is the purpose of this deception?---increase the level of fear in the population regarding big brother being able to know everything that you do in the privacy of your home.
