A collapsed sewer line caused a giant sinkhole to open up in Homewood on Thursday morning.

Officials from Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority said a 20-inch sewer line collapsed and caused the sinkhole on Brushton Avenue just before 3 a.m.

Loretta Cousin said the situation could have been a lot more dangerous.

"Someone could have easily driven through there," Cousin said. "That ground just sunk, and cars can't go over it."

PWSA worked to repair the break and sinkhole and also find out what caused the problems.

Cousins said she would like to see crews be more proactive in the older sections of the city.

"I think they should have more maintenance on these places," Cousin said. "Check them out and see how these places are doing because they know it won't last forever."

One lane was reopened at 3 p.m. Crews will return to complete the repairs on Friday.
