The lake with a red star on is called Lake Van. It was formed when a volcano blocked a riverbed and Lake Van was formed like a dam. Lake Van basin was formed in Late Pliocene and attained its final shape with Quaternary volcanic activiries. There are two volcanoes on the north and west of Lake Van which are considered dormant.
Deformation structures are found in Quaternary aged sandy and silty lacustrine sediments in the Lake Van basin. The existence of seismites (deformation structures) in different levels of lacustrine sediments in the basin is an indicator of Quaternary tectonic activity in the region as well as an indicator of frequent occurences of earthquakes with magnitudes of 5 or greater. The fault lines on the eastern side of the lake arequite complex and this is where the Arabian peninsula exerts pressure on the Eurasian plateau. After the 7,2 earthquake the other fault lines are triggered and cause earthquakes of their own.
(The Quaternary Period began with an ice age about 1.8 million years ago. It is often called the Age of Humans. )
(The Pleistocene Epoch - 1.8 million to 11,000 years ago)
Lake Van is the largest lake in Turkey, located in the far east of the country in Van district. It is a saline and soda lake, receiving water from numerous small streams that descend from the surrounding mountains. Lake Van is one of the world's largest endorheic lakes (having no outlet). The original outlet from the basin was blocked by an ancient volcanic eruption.
