A sinkhole on Ingram Road off U.S. 31 stranded a man Thursday, trapping his SUV on the road. According to a county official, the road will be closed through the weekend.

Emergency crews said a towing company was able to pull the vehicle from the sinkhole just before 11 a.m. Thursday morning.

Matthew Keil told WAFF 48 he was driving home from work when he saw what looked like a pothole in the road. When he tried to drive over it, the road buckled underneath him. Keil said he was afraid the SUV might fall if he tried to exit it. Both he and the SUV are fine.

District 3 County Commissioner Bill Latimer said crews replaced the cross drain at the site two weeks ago. Workers were waiting for drain to settle and were preparing to pour new asphalt around the location. The area "got inundated during the rain and water came over the road and washed the fill out," he said.

Crews will have to wait a few days until the area dries so they can begin work, Latimer said. The road will be closed through the weekend. "We will get it back as open as quick as we can," Latimer said, adding he hopes to be working as soon as Monday.

Anyone traveling Ingram Road in Limestone County can detour to either Stewart Road or Sandlin Street.
