A mysterious explosion yesterday left police wondering what its source was as their investigations led them to nothing - except quiet fields and 'witnesses' who could not explain what had happened.

The loud explosion took place in the vicinity of Dingli Cliffs at 6.20pm, but it was heard from several places across the island, including far away Pembroke, Naxxar, Swieqi and Mellieħa.

But when police and Civil Protection Department personnel rushed on site, with all indications pointing to another blast caused by fireworks, there was no evidence that anything of the sort had happened.

There was no plume of smoke, no debris and no smell of chemicals. The police searched all the area in question, but they could not pinpoint the exact spot where the blast occurred.

People who live in the vicinity also described it as an "earthquake, as doors shook and windows rattled.

The police kept up their investigations till late in the evening, but they were still [unable] to find out what caused the blast as theories abounded.
