Forecasters have issued a tornado watch for most of North Texas until midnight as a cold front moves into the area bringing with it storms that will be packing damaging winds, large hail and heavy rains.

"These storms could produce tornadoes," said meteorologist Dan Shoemaker of the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth referring to the Sunday storms.

There's a 40 percent of thunderstorms today, and there are chances of rain on Monday and Tuesday.

North Texans could be in for gusty winds like the ones Saturday night.

National Weather Service officials said that 59 mile-per-hour winds hit Fort Worth late Saturday night. Other wind totals included the Dallas//Fort Worth Airport, 58 mph; Meacham Airport, 62 mph; and Addison, 58 mph.

Oncor officials reported about 4,000 customers without power in the Fort Worth-Dallas area on Sunday afternoon. At 2 a.m. Sunday, that number was 44,000.

Storms dumped heavy rains in parts of North Texas on Saturday. Gordon in Palo Pinto County received about four inches of rain, according to the NWS in Fort Worth.

But no heavy rains were reported in the Possum Kingdom Lake area on Saturday. Lower winds and higher humidity have helped firefighters in the last few days with wildfires that have destroyed more than 160 homes and two churches at Possum Kingdom. Officials estimated that the wildfires at the lake were 50 percent contained on Sunday.

Wildfires continued burning on Sunday at numerous locations in the state. The Texas Forest Service reported that 17 new wildfires were burning on Saturday.

Forecasters say that there's a 40 percent chance of severe storms at Possum Kingdom Lake today.

Officials have issued a fire weather watch from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday for the western counties of North Texas including the Possum Kingdom area as humidity levels drop and gusty winds are predicted.
