The state is investigating a mysterious substance that apparently killed hundreds of fish in a private pond over Memorial Day weekend.

Cobb County Fire spokesman Lieutenant Dan Dupree says the department contacted the Georgia Department of Natural Resources after getting a call from Claude Beaver on Sunday afternoon about his pond.

Dupree says the nearly 2-acre pond was covered in a strange film and hundreds of brim, carp and bass were dead in the water.

He says officials don't know what the substance is but are sure it is not dangerous to the public or the nearby Chattahoochee River.

Dupree says investigators are looking into a possible link between the deaths and two tanker trucks sitting upstream from the pond.

Beaver did not immediately a call for comment.
