Wellington -- An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale hit the South Pacific Island nation of Vanuatu on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake hit at 10:23 p.m. Vanuatu time (1123 GMT), at a depth of 10 km, some 120 km southeast of Luganville, Espiritus Santo of Vanuatu.

No casualties or damage have been reported so far and no tsunami has been issued.
