Meteor fireball caught on dashcam over Central Texas on December 9

mmmmm
If you were looking outside just before 7 p.m. Tuesday, you may have seen something really bright flying quickly through the sky. We had a fireball in the skies over Central Texas!

The American Meteor Society received multiple reports of a bright ball in the sky over different parts of the state around that time. Tuesday night's fireball comes during the Geminid meteor shower, which peaks on Saturday.

A viewer driving along 183 N in Leander caught video of the fireball on their dashcam around 6:45 p.m.

A fireball is created when a meteoroid — small rocky or icy space debris — burns up as a meteor when entering Earth's atmosphere. If that meteor creates a bright enough light and is brighter than the planet Venus, then it's known as a fireball.

Eyes across Calgary and other parts of the province were captivated by a fireball that lit up the sky Sunday evening.

Joseph Madamesila was with his family at the Spruce Meadows Christmas Market around 5:30 p.m. when he saw it.

"We just happened to be in the right place at the right time. ... I saw something burning and (moving) through the sky. I just thought I should take a video of it," said Madamesila.

On his iPhone, he was able to capture an 11-second video of it.

"It was really cool," he said.

"Lots of people in the crowd in that Christmas market were looking out, and they were really interested in it."

Anita Den Hertog was eight kilometres east of Drumheller when she captured the fireball.

She told CTV News it moved fast and made noise.
