Update: Lightning deaths increase to 31 in a day across Bihar, India

At least 31 people have been killed and more than 10 others injured in the incidents of lightning strikes in India's eastern state in the last 24 hours, a disaster management body said Monday.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Bihar State Disaster Management Authority official Anirudh Kumar said: "31 deaths were reported from different districts of the state. Majority of the casualties took place in Rohtas, Vaishali, Patna, Buxor and Saran districts."

In a press release issued on Monday, the state government announced a compensation of $6,300 to the families of the victims.

Deaths due to rain-related incidents during monsoon period are common in India. Majority of those died were working on farms.

Storms bring multiple waterspouts to North Carolina

Strong storms created several waterspouts in the Outer Banks on Monday.

Drew Pearson with Dare County Emergency Services tells 13News Now that at least three waterspouts were sighted: one in Colington Harbor, another off Kill Devil Hills, and a third in Kitty Hawk.

Pearson says there are some reports of blown off roof shingles, but no major damage has been reported at this time.

A Tornado Warning that was in effect for Dare County expired at 11:30 a.m.

A spectacular stovepipe tornado formed on a severe isolated supercell near Vienna, Austria this afternoon.

No significant damage has so far been reported, but the passengers at the Vienna airport were treated to a spectacle - and likely a somewhat uneasy feeling about flying.

Rare hailstorm hits the town of Nyahururu, Kenya

Kenyans on Tuesday evening took to social media to celebrate a rare case of snow falling in the East African country.

Photos and videos shared on social media showed whitish substance on the streets of the town of Nyahururu located in the country's Laikipia County.

The Kenyan Meteorological Agency, however, clarified and explained that the incident was a case of rare hail storm and not snow. ''For it to snow temperatures are usually below 0°C," they explained.
The event in Nyahururu is a hail storm. Such storms occurs when there is abrupt convection and rain clouds form too fast.

Lightning strikes kill at least 26 people in 24 hours across Bihar, India

At least 26 persons, including women and children, were killed and over a dozen injured in incidents of lightning strikes across Bihar in last 24 hours, an official said here on Monday.

Deaths were reported from Vaishali, Patna, Rohtas, Saran, Buxar, Bhojpur, Gaya, Samastipur, Siwan, Araria and Aurangabad districts on Sunday, Bihar State Disaster Department official Anirudh Kumar said.

The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the family of each victim.

Lightning strikes during the June-September monsoon season are common across Bihar, with bamboo and grass huts more at risk.

Bihar received heavy rainfall on Sunday, and the Meteorological Department has forecast similar conditions on Monday as well.

Auckland city hit by more than 700 lightning strikes in fierce thunderstorm

More than 700 lightning strikes lit up the stormy sky over Auckland during a violent thunderstorm yesterday evening.

MetService duty forecaster Tuporo Marsters said the city was struck by 701 flashes and rocked by loud, rolling thunderclaps.

The dangerous storm swept across the city at rush hour, grounding flights, flooding homes and shops, and leaving roads knee-deep in water.

Spectacular footage has also emerged on social media capturing the moment a lightning fork struck the top of the city's tallest building.

Intermittent monsoon rain pounded the country Monday, destroying bridges and roads and leaving at least one person missing in a flooded stream.

While more rain - falling at 30 to 80 millimeters per hour -- is expected in Seoul, Gyeonggi and most other parts of the country until Wednesday, a typhoon is fast approaching waters off Jeju Island, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.

"The monsoon rain front will become stronger, influenced by water vapor from the typhoon and bring more torrential rain to some regions," said KMA official.

A 86-year-old man went missing after falling into a flooded stream in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, which received over 100 millimeters of rain between midnight Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday.

A bridge was destroyed and four mountain hikers were marooned by a flood in Hongcheon, Gangwon Province, where 343 mm of rain fell overnight.

Man killed by lightning bolt in Midland, Texas

A man died Monday night after being struck by lightning in Texas, police said.

Emergency crews received a call about the lightning strike hitting a person around 6:15 p.m. at Maple Avenue Monday, Midland police spokeswoman Rachel Walker told KWES. When they arrived, they found an unresponsive man.

The man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, KWES reported.

Authorities did not release the man's name or the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Midland is a small city in west Texas on Interstate 20.

Rare landspout spotted over Tibet for first time in more than 50 years

The strange phenomenon has not been seen in the area since 1961 and was a shocking sight for youngsters seeing it for the first time


Tibetan villagers stood staring at the sky as a gigantic landspout passed overhead for the first time in more than 50 years.

The weather phenomenon rarely happen at high altitudes making the sight even more unusual.

Youngsters were filmed watching the skies above Dangxiong County in south-west China in awe and disbelief - with many pointing or holding their wide-open mouths.

The strange phenomenon has not been seen in the area since 1961 and was a shocking sight for youngsters seeing it for the first time in Tibet - also known as 'the roof of the world'.

The landspout, which looks like a tornado but has nothing to do with a storm or bad weather, lasted more than 10 minutes.
