Two Northland fishermen stumbled on a scene resembling a winter wonderland after a freak hail storm left hundreds of metres of a remote beach blanketed in ice.

David Bishop, of Kerikeri, and his mate Bryce Taylor, of Glinks Gully, had been fishing at the entrance of Kaipara Harbour on Saturday when they decided to call it a day around 5pm.

Their route home took them around Pouto Point, past the historic lighthouse, and north up Ripiro Beach towards Dargaville.

A few hundred metres north of the lighthouse they saw something that had them rubbing their eyes in disbelief.

"When we were fishing we heard a bit of thunder, but no rain or anything, so sweet as, we finished fishing and come around the corner past the lighthouse, and then it was like, 'Holy s***!' We just couldn't believe it."

The Andes Mountains are engulfed in a major storm, with Valle Nevado sitting in the heart of the action. The famous Chilean ski area has received over 43" of snow in the last five days, with 32" falling in the last 24 hours as of 9 AM MST August 22, according to Open Snow.

"It was a wild Wednesday night, and it got even more hectic on Thursday as winds picked up," said Open Snow meteorologist Luke Stone. "The second phase of the storm began on Thursday night as the cold front moved across the Andes with more heavy snow. The storm should linger through Friday afternoon before tapering off overnight."

Our friends from the Montana-based Entourage crew are boots on the ground and were some of the lucky individuals who woke up to multiple feet of snow blanketing the parking lot. While much of the resort skiing remains closed, there are always other opportunities. "Backcountry conditions are dicey, so we're looking to hit a street spot and wait for the chance to head into the mountains," said filmer Jack Price.

A spectacular 'cap de fibló'—a rare waterspout phenomenon—was spotted this morning by residents in the Calvia area, as towering cloud formations painted a dramatic sky over Mallorca. Eyewitnesses described the scene as "breathtaking" and "like something out of a disaster movie."

The island has been put on high alert this Friday, with authorities warning of heavy rain and severe storms, particularly from midday onwards. By the afternoon, the downpours—which have already battered Menorca—are expected to lash Mallorca, bringing localised flooding in low-lying areas.

Temperatures are predicted to remain largely unchanged, according to the Balearic branch of AEMET, while the wind will blow lightly from variable directions, accompanied by coastal breezes.

Landslide caused by heavy rains buries homes outside Guinea's capital, killing 15 and injuring 10 (UPDATE)

Guinea Landslide

Heavy rains caused a landslide that struck homes in a rural community in Guinea, killing at least 11 people, authorities said Thursday. Another 10 people were seriously injured and the death toll was expected to rise.

The landslide occurred Wednesday night in Maneah, a rural commune in Coyah prefecture 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the capital Conakry, according to a statement by the National Agency for Emergency Management.

"Last night, it was around 7 p.m. It was raining, and suddenly I saw the mountain come off. It fell on the houses at the foot of the mountain. The mud buried the houses. No survivors came out alive," said Kone Pepe, a local resident.

Search and rescue operations were continuing late Thursday.

"It's a part of the mountain that gave way under the effect of the rain and spilled onto the buildings," Mory Condé, minister of urban planning and housing, said during a visit to the site.

The collapse followed heavy rains in the area and comes after West Africa experienced record flooding last year that killed over 1,000 people and displaced hundreds of thousands.

Italy has been hit with deadly floods as intense 'water bomb' storms lash down on tourist hotspots causing bridges to crumble and sweeping cars away.

One man has tragically died after being dragged away by an overflowing river after a furious storm struck Sicily, turning roads into rivers.

The popular southern island has been inundated by aggressive rain and Matteo Ciurca, 40, was swept away by the swollen Crisa River in Leonforte, a small commune, after a 'water bomb' smashed the region.

Dramatic footage shows a bridge crumbling as heaps of rocks, concrete, water and other debris hit the ground during a heavy rainstorm.

Vehicles on the San Giuliano bridge near the picturesque town of Randazzo were left in peril as they waded through high waters while the bridge partly disintegrated on Sunday.

One white van can be seen struggling through high waters as rain lashes down and blocks of debris fall.

Comment: La Stampa reports:
Heavy rain fell on the island of Elba, with 54 mm of rain falling in less than an hour in Portoferraio this evening. The regional Civil Protection system is responding to flooding. Trees and rocks have fallen on the island's roads. Elba is caught in a vast storm system, described by regional meteorologists as "slowly evolving," currently affecting an area stretching from the island of Pianosa to the Colline Metallifere, passing through the Gulf of Follonica and Grosseto. Lightning has been reported in large numbers, and the rainfall is particularly heavy. The storm system is expected to move toward other central and southern areas of Tuscany. In the province of Grosseto, firefighters are primarily working in the municipalities of Follonica and Castiglione della Pescaia, where fallen trees have blocked some roads in Le Strette and Macchiascandona, and buildings and private homes in Follonica have been flooded.
