A large sinkhole reduced Queen Street in Brampton to one lane between Highway 50 and The Gore Road on Tuesday.

City crews are advising drivers to avoid the area since only one eastbound lane on Queen Street is open, while two others remain closed.

Crews estimate the lanes will be closed for the rest of Tuesday and won't reopen until after Wednesday morning's rush hour at the earliest.

A car was partially submerged in a sinkhole in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood Tuesday evening.

A bystander took photos of the black car stopped on Mission and New Montgomery streets at about 6 p.m.

The front driver's side wheel of the vehicle, a black Chevrolet, was in the hole in the middle of the road.

Traffic had come to a standstill and emergency crews were on the scene. Muni buses were stopped at the intersection.

A crowd of pedestrians gathered around the intersection, many heading home on their evening commutes.

The car's unlucky owner, Ghazi Hassan, was just visiting his brother the night before and parked the car near Benefice of Charlton St. Thomas' Church.

North American tectonic plate peeling off

Earth's Mantle
© Johan Swanepoel/ShutterstockScientists suspect that chunks from the bottom of the North American tectonic plate, which is the upper portion of the mantle, are peeling off and sinking. Replacing the resulting void is gooey material from the asthenosphere.
An odd phenomenon may explain why the Southeastern United States has experienced recent earthquakes, even though the region sits snugly in the middle of a tectonic plate and not at the edges, where all the ground-shaking action usually happens.

This seismicity — or relatively frequent earthquakes — may be the result of areas along the bottom of the North American tectonic plate peeling off, the researchers said. And this peeling motion is likely to continue, leading to more earthquakes in the future, like the 2011 magnitude-5.8 temblor that shook the nation's capital.

To figure out the cause of these earthquakes, Berk Biryol, a seismologist at UNC Chapel Hill, and colleagues created 3D images of the uppermost part of Earth's mantle, which is just below the crust and comprises the bottom of a tectonic plate. These tectonic plates scoot around atop a layer of warm, viscous fluid called the asthenosphere.

The resulting X-ray images revealed that the plate's thickness in the southeast United States was uneven, with thick regions of dense, old rock combined with thinner areas composed of younger rocks that were also less dense.

A sinkhole that opened up at the foot of Canal Street Friday (April 29) will take up to six months and $5 million to repair, city officials said.

The collapse, which caved in a 30-foot-wide section of one of New Orleans busiest streets, happened just a few feet away from the spot where Mayor Mitch Landrieu and his infrastructure team had been standing hours earlier in a 50 year-old tunnel that runs underneath the road.

The team was on site to inspect one of the tunnel's walls, which had begun to buckle earlier this month, allowing water to spill in. A few hours after they left, the wall collapsed, taking the road along with it.

"This is nothing short of incredible," Landrieu said. "Unfortunately, it's not a surprise," given the city's creaking infrastructure and unstable soil, he said. "Still, I've never seen anything like it."

SE Milwaukie Avenue at Reedway reopened just after 3 p.m. Friday

Crews with the Portland Bureau of Transportation responded to several sinkholes in the past week, including one on Friday morning that was discovered at NE 16th and Prescott which closed the intersection for part of the day.

A hole in the road also closed part of N. Interstate Avenue near the Broadway Bridge for part of Friday. Crews discovered the hole earlier in the morning while they were repairing damage to the storm water system.

Crews also worked to repair a sinkhole at SE Milwaukie Avenue and SE Reedway.

Dylan Rivera, the spokesperson for the Portland Bureau of Transportation, told KOIN 6 News the city averages "a few hundred sinkholes" each year.

"It could be a construction issue, could be a worn out pipe," Rivera said.
