Record-breaking rain has fallen in northern New South Wales as emergency services prepare for further falls in an already soaked catchment.

On Monday, Evans Head broke the daily record for August with 157mm, the highest August daily rainfall in 28 years, according to meteorologist Jiwon Park from the Bureau of Meteorology.

"This event so far has brought more than 200mm in several stations in the northern rivers," he said.

"Goonengerry received more than 247mm in two days."

A coastal trough is expected to extend from Queensland to the NSW north coast on Tuesday evening and the SES is warning the state's north to be prepared as further rain begins to fall.

25 killed in landfill collapse after heavy rainfall in Kampala, Uganda (UPDATE)

Eight people were killed in the accident
Eight people were killed in the accident
Eight people, including two children, lost their lives when a landfill in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, collapsed on Saturday, according to the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA). The tragic incident occurred in Kiteezi, a district in the northern part of Kampala, following heavy rainfall that triggered a landslide at the garbage dump.

Local media reported that the landslide engulfed homes, people, and animals in the area, leading to the significant loss of life and damage. The KCCA, which manages the landfill, confirmed the deaths in a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. "On a very sad note, eight people have so far been found dead, six adults and two children," the statement read.

In addition to the fatalities, the KCCA reported that 14 people had been rescued and taken to the hospital. However, the authority did not provide details about the condition of those injured. "The rescue operation is still ongoing and we shall share updates as they come in," the KCCA stated, indicating that efforts to find more survivors or victims were continuing.

Comment: Update August 13

AFP reports:
The death toll from a mountain of garbage that collapsed in Kampala has risen to 25 with no hope of finding survivors, a minister said on Tuesday (Aug 13).

The huge mound in the Ugandan capital's northern district of Kiteezi collapsed on Saturday, burying people and livestock.

"By late yesterday evening, we had recovered 25 bodies and no survivors found," said Lillian Aber, Uganda's state minister for disaster preparedness and relief.

"We don't expect more survivors," she told AFP. It was not immediately clear how many people were unaccounted for. The Ugandan prime minister's office said three children whose parents were still missing were being sheltered.

Heavy rain has hampered the rescue as excavators churned through the garbage. President Yoweri Museveni directed the army's special forces to help in the search.

The remnants of Hurricane Debby brought heavy flooding to parts of the Northeast before the storm left the United States and crossed into Canada late Friday night.

The storm spent the better part of a week unleashing tornadoes and flooding, damaging homes and taking lives as it moved up the East Coast after first arriving in Florida as a hurricane. The storm is expected to continue moving northeast.

At least seven people have died related to Debby — four in Florida, including two children, one in Georgia and two in North Carolina. Rockingham's sheriff confirmed to CBS News that a woman was killed when a tree fell on a mobile home in Brown Summit, North Carolina.

Some of the worst flash flooding in New York on Friday happened in villages and hamlets in a largely rural area south of the Finger Lakes. First responders launched high-water and helicopter rescues of people trapped in cars and homes in rural New York and Pennsylvania as heavy rain caused intense floods.

More than 167,000 customers were without power across New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont on Friday night, according to utility tracker PowerOutage.us.

Heavy Rains, Landslides, Flash Floods Block 288 Roads In Himachal Pradesh

Landslides and flash floods triggered by heavy rains over the last two days has led to the closure of more than 280 roads in Himachal Pradesh, with 150 being closed on Saturday, according to officials.

Water from overflowing streams has entered several houses in Una while the Lahaul and Spiti police have issued an advisory for residents and travellers to exercise extreme caution and not to cross the Jahalman Nallah as its water level is "rapidly" rising, they said.

Rescue operations to trace about 30 people who went missing after the July 31 flash floods in Kullu, Mandi and Shimla districts are being conducted but there has been no major success. So far, 28 bodies have been recovered, the officials said.

A dam burst in the town of Dalnerechensk in the far east of Russia overnight on Aug. 6, regional authorities told state-owned TASS news agency. This marks the fourth such case in Russia in two weeks.

On July 26, a dam broke at the Kialimskoye water reservoir in the Karabash urban district of Russia's Chelyabinsk region.

In the Segezha district of Karelia, a dam on the White Sea-Baltic Canal burst on July 29, killing one person. The Khonkholoy dam in Buryatia broke due to floods on Aug. 4, causing water to wash away several bridges.

In April 2024, the Russian city of Orengurg was flooded after several rivers, including the Ural, burst from their banks, and the Orsk Dam collapsed. The water levels in the city rose 2 meters above the critical level, flooding 11,700 homes, according to the local authorities.

Flooding in Yemen has left 30 people dead and hundreds displaced, official says

Yemen official says 30 people have been killed and hundreds displaced in flooding
A Yemeni official said Wednesday that 30 people have been killed and hundreds displaced in flooding in the southern city of Hodeidah following several days of heavy rains.

Hodeidah Gov. Mugammad Qahim told Houthi rebel-controlled Masirah TV that the floods displaced people from 500 homes. Five people were missing, he said.

Hodeidah, the southwestern city of Taiz, and the northwestern city of Hajjah were all hit hard by floods this week during Yemen's ongoing seasonal rainfall that caused flooding that swept away poorly built homes.

Authorities have not announced a confirmed overall death toll, or given the overall number of people injured or missing.

Yemen's rainy season begins in late March, and rains intensify in July through mid-August.

The U.N.'s humanitarian office in Yemen said Wednesday afternoon that Friday floods in the Maqbnah district in Taiz city killed 15 people, cleared agricultural lands and damaged homes and infrastructure.

Gargantuan waves in Earth's mantle may make continents rise, new study finds

Dramatic cliffs and high plateaus are caused by the same wave triggered in Earth's middle layer when continents pull apart, a new study finds.

High plateaus rise in the interior of continents thanks to churning deep inside Earth hundreds of miles from where they eventually spring up, new research suggests.

As continents break up, massive cliff walls may rise near the boundaries where the crust is pulling apart. That breakup sets off a wave in Earth's middle layer, the mantle, that slowly rolls inward over tens of millions of years, fueling the rise of plateaus, the new study found.

Scientists have long known that continental rifts triggered the rise of massive escarpments, like the cliff walls that separate the East African Rift Valley from the Ethiopian plateau, said lead author Thomas Gernon, a geoscientist at the University of Southampton in the U.K. And these steep cliffs sometimes fringe inland plateaus that rise from the strong, stable cores of continents, known as cratons.

But because these two landscape features usually form tens of millions to up to 100 million years apart, many scientists thought the different formations were driven by different processes, Gernon told Live Science in an email.

Forty-three people spent the night in Juneau's emergency shelter at Floyd Dryden Middle School on Monday night as a record-high flood from the Mendenhall Glacier inundated homes.

Deputy City Manager Robert Barr said the total number of people who evacuated their homes is likely several times that; shelters are usually a last resort for people who cannot stay with family, friends or in a hotel.

"You can imagine how hard it would be to wake up with water in your house, not expecting there to be water in your house," he said.

The Juneau Assembly declared a local disaster emergency and requested state and federal assistance in an emergency meeting at noon Tuesday. Gov. Mike Dunleavy declared the flood a state emergency on Tuesday morning, and a federal disaster request is expected soon.
