Flash floods caused by torrential rain have swept the southern Russian Krasnodar region, killing 144 people, officials say.

The floods, the worst there in living memory, struck at night, reportedly without warning.

TV pictures showed people scrambling onto their rooftops to escape.

President Vladimir Putin has flown over the region by helicopter and has had emergency talks with officials in the worst-hit town of Krymsk.

Most of those who died were in and around Krymsk, a town of 57,000 people. But nine deaths were reported in the Black Sea resort of Gelendzhik with a further two in the port town of Novorossiysk.

Chaos in skies over Britain: forecasters describe horrific summer as 'the worst since records began'

Image

Britain is facing its "worst ever" summer with cold wet weather ruining family holidays and blighting the Olympics, forecasters warned last night. August is set to be a washout following a miserable July and the wettest June since records began - meaning summer is effectively over. Gloomy forecasts suggest dire weather will continue as officials last night put Britain on flood alert after torrential downpours yesterday wreaked havoc.

As the Environment Agency warned of a "potential danger to life" with rivers swelling to breaking point in the Midlands, Yorkshire and Wales, Government forecasters were on standby to brief the Cabinet if severe floods strike. The agency last night issued 51 flood warnings - meaning flooding is expected - and 135 alerts. Monsoon-like downpours hit 85,000 music fans at the T In The Park festival in Kinross, Scotland, and 28,000 Formula 1 spectators camping for the British Grand Prix weekend at Silverstone. Race meetings today in Nottingham and Carlisle were cancelled while play was delayed on all courts at Wimbledon - other than Centre Court.

'Unimaginable' - month's amount of rain falls in hours: flash flooding kills over 100 in Russia

Image
© UnknownFlash floods from heavy rain in the Krasnodar Krai region in southern Russia have killed dozens of people.
At least 103 people have died as floodwaters surge through southern Russia's Krasnodar region, Russia's Interior Ministry said Saturday.

Of those killed, 92 are in the Krymsk district, nine in Gelendzhik district and two in the Black Sea port of Novorossiisk, the ministry said.

The flash floods follow heavy rains in the area since Friday.

The Krymsk district is a mostly rural area with many one-storey homes, Russia's state news agency Itar-Tass reported.

Flood waters rose 7 meters (23 feet) overnight in Krymsk, the news agency said, flooding homes while most people were still asleep. Others were rescued by police after seeking refuge on roofs and in trees, it said.

The death toll has climbed steadily through the day as the waters have gradually subsided, allowing police to find more bodies in flooded buildings in Krymsk.

Coolest July 4th for Phoenix in 100 years; Flooding in Casa Grande

Phoenix -- Wow, what a weather day in the Valley. We had scattered showers and mostly cloudy conditions throughout the day.

At Sky Harbor Airport, we got .14" of rain (as of 3pm, Wednesday), the first measurable rain at the airport in 55 days!

Top it off with afternoon temperatures in the 70s and we're thinking, this has got to be the coolest July 4th on record for Phoenix. It was. Almost.

Here is the information for today: The high will go down as 91 degrees. That actually happened just past midnight during the early morning hours. Yes, the high occurred in the morning.

The low will mostly likely end up being 74 degrees. It could go lower before midnight, but if so, not by much.

More flooding as torrential rain hits UK again

Torrential rain is causing disruption, with up to a month's rain expected to fall in parts of the UK within a day.

The number of flood warnings, meaning flooding is expected, is steadily rising in England, and more than 120 flood alerts are in place in the UK.

A caravan park in North Yorkshire is being evacuated amid flooding, and sporting fixtures are being affected.

Meanwhile, Prince Charles has visited flood-hit Hebden Bridge, in West Yorkshire, which is seeing more rain.

The Environment Agency has issued 124 flood alerts, which warn people to be prepared for possible flooding.

The town of Darwen in Lancashire, which was evacuated last month when rivers burst their banks - is among 35 places in the North East, the North West, the Midlands and the Anglian region of England, that are subject to a flood warning.

Flash floods roll through Auckland

Parts of Auckland were hit by surface flooding this afternoon, as a severe thunderstorm rolled through the region.

The Fire Service was inundated with more than 150 calls over a few hours this afternoon, mostly from central and west Auckland and the North Shore, but also from Waihi to the east.

Most of the reports were for surface flooding, and several business had to shut shop for the day while rain poured through damaged roofs.

One was central Auckland strip club Calendar Girls where the upstairs section was flooded and water trickled through the ceiling to the downstairs bar.

Hobson St in central Auckland was closed about noon after high winds lifted a section of roof.

Worst Monsoon Floods in Northeast India in a Decade Force 2 Million to Flee Homes, Kill 81

Gauhati - The worst monsoon floods in a decade to hit a remote northeastern Indian state have killed more than 80 people and forced around 2 million to leave their homes.

Nearly half a million people are living in relief camps that have been set up across Assam state, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told journalists Monday in Gauhati, Assam's capital. The rest of the 2 million displaced are living with relatives or sheltering under tarpaulin sheets.

Assam officials say 81 people have been killed over the past four days. Most were swept away when the mighty Brahmaputra River overflowed and flooded villages. Sixteen people were buried in landslides triggered by the rains.

At least 11 people were missing in six districts, the state disaster management agency said.

Air force helicopters were dropping food packets and drinking water to marooned people, Singh said after surveying the flood-hit districts.

Army soldiers used boats to rescue villagers from rooftops of flooded homes.

Teams of doctors have opened health clinics in the 770 relief camps that had been set up across Assam, one of India's main tea-growing states. The hilly tea growing areas have not been affected, but lower rice fields have been washed away.

Torrential rain causes havoc across Ireland with parts of Cork worst hit - wettest June on record

Image
© Renate Murphy (@renatemurphy) Douglas village in Cork this morning.
Ireland has been hit by torrential rain as the summer disappears again - with parts of Cork and Belfast flooded.

Emergency services are struggling to cope with the flash floods across the country as homes are left without electricity.

The towns of Douglas, Bandon and Clonakilty in Cork are badly flooded with some areas under three feet of water.

Residents were evacuated from the Ballyvolane area of Cork city while there is no access in or out of Clonakilty.

The Irish Independent reports that up to 15,000 homes in Cork are currently without electricity after the overnight storms which saw 70mm of rain fall in a few hours.

Flooding has also been reported in parts of Sligo and Tipperary and motorists have been warned to take extreme care.

Cork County Council has confirmed that it activated a flood response plan after the torrential rain.
Ireland's weather service Met Eireann issued a flood alert to more than a dozen county councils with 70mm of rain forecast to fall in parts of Munster, Connacht, south Leinster and the midlands.

Superstorm smashes UK as flash-flooding and 5-inch long hailstones cause widespread damage

A huge clean-up operation was being carried out in parts of Britain today after yesterday's downpours brought flooding chaos to parts of the country. Hailstones as big as golf balls pummelled parts of Leicestershire after black thunderclouds descended. Residents reported cars being dented and damaged by the ice, some even smashing windows.

Torrential storms also left hundreds of homes flooded and motorists having to be rescued from their vehicles. At the storm's peak, 153 lightning strikes were being recorded every minute. The Environment Agency has 10 flood warnings in place in the Midlands, North East and North West, but the worst of the weather looks to be over.

Forecaster Nick Prebble, said: "Today there will be a mixture of sunshine and showers across the UK with temperatures cooling off. "Most parts of Britain could experience the odd passing shower during the day, but the focus of the heavy downpours will be across Scotland. "Northern parts could also have a few thunder storms but the weather doesn't appear to be as severe as yesterday."
