Community effort! 'Worst floods of all time' unite Hungarians to save Budapest

Hungarians are setting aside their differences in a race against time to defend their historic capital Budapest and other areas from what the prime minister predicted will be the "worst floods of all time".

As water levels broke records in the west ahead of an expected peak on Monday, thousands of volunteers joined soldiers and emergency workers -- often crossing traditional social boundaries to make some unlikely alliances -- to roll up their sleeves and don rubber boots.

Students, boy scouts and sports clubs helped to make up and install more than two million sandbags stacked at 16 high-risk locations along the 760 kilometres (475 miles) of the raging Danube River rushing out of Germany and Austria on its way to the Black Sea.

"Hungarians come together at a time of emergency," said one grateful local as she watched workers heave sandbags onto a truck to be taken to a barrier in picturesque, 1.7-million-strong Budapest.

Around 3,000 volunteers, 6,000 emergency service personnel, and the entire Hungarian army have been mobilised across the country. More than 16,000 army, police and civil reservists were also on standby.

German town sees worst flooding in 500 years as rains paralyze Europe, kill 8

Passau - Swollen rivers gushed into the old section of Passau in southeast Germany on Monday, as water rose in the city to levels not seen in more than five centuries.

The city was one of the worst hit by flooding that has spread across a large area of central Europe following heavy rainfall in recent days. At least eight people were reported to have died and nine were missing due to floods in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.

"The situation is extremely dramatic," Herbert Zillinger, a spokesman for Passau's crisis center, told The Associated Press.

Much of the city was inaccessible on foot and the electricity supply was shut down as a precaution, he said. Rescuers were using boats to evacuate residents from flooded parts of the city.

But with water from the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers relentlessly pouring into the city, water was advancing into previously dry streets - in one case going from dry to ankle-deep within half an hour. Markers set in 1954, when the city suffered its worst flooding in living memory, have disappeared beneath the rising water.

At least two people have been killed in devastating floods gripping the western Czech Republic. The disaster caused by torrential rains has prompted the evacuation of metro stations, several hospitals and the zoo in the capital.

Heavy rain over the weekend has resulted in flood warnings in west, north, central and south Bohemia.

At least one woman is dead, after her home collapsed in Trebenice u Prahy, southwest of Prague and two people are missing after their raft overturned on the River Berounka in Hlasna Treban in central Bohemia.

In Prague, rescue workers, aided by the army, have set up flood barriers for the first time since the devastating floods of 2002. Hospitals, retirement homes and cultural institutions as well as the zoo are being evacuated across the city.

A state of emergency has been declared in the Czech Republic due to the threat of flooding, Prime Minister Petr Nečas announced in a televised address.

Thunderstorms bring torrential rains, life-threatening flash flooding to Kansas City area

Thunderstorms with torrential rains moved across the Kansas City area early Friday morning causing life-threatening flash flooding.

Emergency crews, especially in the southern part of the metropolitan area, responded to numerous reports of drivers stuck in high water after they drove into water-covered roads.

The drivers became stranded by the fast rising and swift moving waters.

The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, Mo., continued a flash flood warning for most of the Kansas City area until 11 a.m. Friday.

The warning is in effect for Johnson, northern Miami and southern Leavenworth County in Kansas and southwestern Lafayette, northwestern Johnson, southern Jackson and northern Cass counties in Missouri.

Tropical Storm Mahasen strikes southern Bangladesh: 1 million displaced, 12 dead

A tropical storm has lashed coastal areas of Bangladesh, killing 12 people, destroying thousands of huts and forcing up to a million people to flee. Officials had prepared for a cyclone, but the storm, called Mahasen, weakened considerably before making landfall. The storm hit Patuakhali district on Thursday with heavy rain and wind of up to 100km/h (60mph). Early reports suggest Muslim Rohingya living in camps on both sides of the Burma border were spared the worst. The United Nations had warned that 8.2 million people were at risk from Mahasen in Bangladesh, Burma and north-east India. Several Indian states issued storm alerts and warned people to take precautions against severe weather conditions.

Severe weather slams the USA: Snow, floods and wildfires

wildfire
© AFPHundreds of residents have been forced to leave their homes as strong winds fan the flames of the wildfires
The country endures the extremes of weather from record breaking snowfall to raging wildfires.

The start of May has been a strange one for the USA. It seems that nature can't decide if it's winter or summer.

Heavy rain has flooded parts of Key West in southern Florida. Two days of torrential downpours have led to flooding and in the last 24 hours, 109mm more rain fell across the island.

The rain has flooded homes and businesses and forced the closure of a number of roads.

Whilst rain is the problem in Florida, elsewhere winter is still winning. Heavy snow has smothered parts of the Plains and the Midwest.

Some of the worst weather was in the state of Minnesota, where the snow set new records.

Evacuations ordered as flooding hits eastern France

Officials in eastern France ordered evacuations Saturday after torrential rains hit the Burgundy region.

Some residents of Dijon were ordered out of their homes to escape the rising waters of the Ouche river, which overflowed its banks, after a month's worth of rain poured down over 12 hours.

Dijon firefighters had to rescue three people trapped in a car, and ferry service in Lyon was suspended because the water in the Saone river had risen to the point the boats could not pass under bridges, Radio France Internationale said.

Flood alerts in seven departments were lifted Saturday, however the downpour was expected to continue in other parts of France.
