Montreal - Stephen Hawking's warnings of an alien invasion have prompted a vigorous defence of extraterrestrials by their most prominent Canadian fan.
Former federal defence minister Paul Hellyer, 86, believes not only that aliens have visited Earth but also that they have contributed greatly to human technological advances.
So he can't quite understand why the world renowned astrophysicist views them with such trepidation; Hawking recently warned that malevolent aliens could lead to the destruction of humanity.
The longtime cabinet minister accuses Hawking of spreading misinformation about extraterrestrials.
"I think he's indulging in some pretty scary talk there that I would have hoped would not come from someone with such an established stature," Hellyer said in an interview.
"I think it's really sad that a scientist of his repute would contribute to what I would consider more misinformation about a vast and very important subject."

Rather than harm mankind, he said, their (aliens') spaceships have provided us information for triggering today's microchip and IT revolution on our planet.
Hawking has recently warned humanity against contacting aliens. According to Hawking, if human beings tried to contact aliens, they could invade us and take away our most important resources.
Hawking has also said that though most extraterrestrial life could be only in the form of small animals, there could also be "nomads, looking to conquer and colonize" other planets.
Hellyer told the Canadian Press that "the reality is that they (aliens) have been visiting earth for decades and probably millennia and have contributed considerably to our knowledge."

Beyond that, the question of what was caught on a News 5 skycam at the end of Tuesday's 11 p.m. newscast remains unanswered.
A couple watching the newscast first alerted the station to what they saw in the closing shot before the Tonight Show.
In the few moments it appeared on screen, the streak of light appeared from behind the Great American Tower and shot in a straight line up and out of screen to the upper right.

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the leader of the southern region of Kalymkia, made his claim in a television interview.
MP Andre Lebedev is not just asking whether Mr Ilyumzhinov is fit to govern.
He is also concerned that, if he was abducted, he may have revealed details about his job and state secrets.
The MP has written a letter to Mr Medvedev raising a list of his concerns.
In his letter he says that - assuming the whole thing was not just a bad joke - it was an historic event and should have been reported to the Kremlin.

Residents in one northeast Albuquerque neighborhood reported seeing a bright flash in the sky Monday night and that a meteorite landed in front of their homes.
"Very bright like day turning to night," said Janice Marshall.
The mystery on La Fiesta Dr. off of Osuna began at 11:30 p.m.
"Well, the electronics went off in the house too," Marshall said.
When Marshall went outside to investigate along with other neighbors, they said they found evidence of a meteorite.
"You could see white patches going up the street," added Marshall.
University of New Mexico Professor Horton Newsom, who works as a researcher for the Institute of Meteoritics, went to check out whatever it was that people in Marshall's neighborhood thought had fallen from the sky.
"Very, very rare," said Newsom. "Maybe one (meteorite sightings) in a few hundred turns out to be real."
It turns out that bright flash that startled so many residents on La Fiesta came from above. Just not where they thought.
"Unfortunately, I don't think it's a meteorite," said Newsom.

Location of Sighting: Framwellgate Moor Durham
Date of Sighting: 3rd May 2010
Time: 9.15pm
Witness Statement: Saw various formations of luminous orange lights (x8) in the sky that kept moving in a triangular shape. All lights changed to the shape of the 'Plough' constellation. A larger light came in to view and gradually faded into the distance. Other lights disappeared. Not the only witness in the street.

Witness Statement: At 10.15 last night I saw a solid and clear orange light in the distance. We watched this whilst opening the window. There was no noise at all. As the light came nearer it changed from what appeared to be a solid orange ball into what looked like a circle made up of separate lights with spokes made up of separate lights also going into the centre of the circle.

Witness Statement: I was staying over at my Mums house in Virginia St Southport & before going to bed at about 11.30pm, I went to the back door to see if Mum's cat was ready to come in. As soon as I opened the back doo, I saw an orange light I estimate no less than half a mile from the house, it glowed with an orange haze around it & had a blue light & a red light shining downwards at an angle. The blue and red lights crossed each other underneath the orange glowing ship, the lights remained the same colour after they had crossed paths.

Witness Statement: My husband let our dog out in the garden and called me to come see what was in the sky. I looked at what he was looking at but could only see a bright fuzzy light. We have binos in the kitchen so I grabbed those. When I looked at the light through the binos it was a very large sphere that appeared to be made up of many octagon-shaped bands of light moving across the sky towards the east. I watched it for several seconds until it disappeared behind the clouds.

Witness Statement: My husband saw a bright orange light in the sky from the kitchen window which he thought was the police helicopter on fire so he ran outside to see. He shouted me to go and look as it wasn't a fire or the police helicopter. When I got outside there were two what looked to me like small planes or hang gliders passing overhead, as it was dark I couldn't make out how low they were but I would say about helicopter height. There was a bright orange glow and what looked like a wing with all red/orange light bulbs all over it. My husband didn't notice the wing shape or the reddy lights as he was concentrating on the orange fire glow which he said seemed to extend upwards in a cylindrical shape.
